Y2K trends are currently experiencing a modern-day renaissance. While we were initially skeptical (umm, low-rise jeans are make us nervous), we’re now majorly feeling the vibe. Cropped lilac tops, strappy sandals, gemstones around the eyes, and a baguette bag under your arm – the hottest fashion and beauty trends of Summer 2022 might boil down to Maddy from Euphoria for Gen Z, but make for a major nostalgia-inducing flashback for many Millennials.
With our Instagram feeds flooded with juicy glosses or matte brown lips, glittery eyes, and blue eyeshadow with sharp winged liner, it’s time to experiment with Y2K makeup for your desi outfits. To take a trip back in time and add some nostalgia to your desi outfits, read ahead for your crash course to try Euphoria-esque looks with a lehenga, sari, and more.
The fashion folks are mixing it up these days especially when it comes to Indian outfits, like draping a sari with a pant, or a crop top worn as a blouse with a sari. So experimenting with Y2K makeup is also on-trend. In fact, it’s easier to create eye looks embellished with sequins and rhinestones with ethnic wear, as bindis are synonymous with desi outfits.
Y2K makeup trends are back with fervor even in Bollywood and are becoming a trend for Indian weddings as well. The classic gel graphic winged liner, nude matte eyelids lined with crystals on the edge elevate an ordinary makeup look and blend with Indian Fashion. To add extra oomph, you can go for a wispy pair of falsies.
Don’t shy away from going Boho and creative with your desi outfits. You can do a take on the eyebrow crown worn traditionally by many brides in India, especially by Bengali brides. Add small flowers to your hair, and use coloured bindis and sequins to create a pattern arching above the brows.
Here’s a little trick for brides and bridesmaids: switch from a matte nude eyeshadow to a colourful pop of glitter or metallic eyeshadow. Alternatively, sticking on a couple of bindis will also do the trick. Just add two diamante bindis on the inner corner where you usually add a highlighter and you’re good to go! To amp up the drama, add a pearl drop at the tip of the eyeliner, or use black sequined bindis to fill the entire flick.
Blush contouring is hogging the beauty spotlight right now. The new version of the Y2K trend involves blending your contour and blush and applying them in an upward direction to get a little pink from the blush but also a contour. Use a foundation brush to blend the cream contour seamlessly and then add blush. Never mix a cream formula with a powder one when blending two together.
You can go for the new-age version of the matte brown lips or wear the juiciest pink gloss. Use lip plumper in gloss or matte pinks, as it goes well with Indian outfits. Add a little cream highlighter in the middle for sparkly lips. When sporting a smoky eye, go for a matte nude lip. Just use a darker shade to line your lips and then take a dome brush to blend the liner so that it’s not stark but soft and more blended.
Ain’t nobody like my Desi girl!
