Frizziness and dryness are both taken up a notch because of the sudden changes in temperature between the freezing weather outside and the heated atmosphere inside. And as if that wasn’t enough, we also have to deal with a flaky scalp.

So, to figure out the best way to protect hair in the cold weather, we spoke to celebrity hairstylist, Priyanka Borkar to know how to keep our hair smooth, shiny and problem-free this winter. Here are the most effective tips, tricks, and techniques to learn from the best in the biz.

Your hair is extremely vulnerable, brittle and prone to damage during the cooler months. Flaky scalps and frizzy hair are some of the most common hair woes faced by the best of us. But there are simple ways to avoid these issues.

Indulge In At-Home Remedies To Maintain Smooth And Healthy Locks

“I’m all about trying out ingredients available at home when it comes to following a winter hair care routine,” says Priyanka.

She further explains that ingredients like yoghurt, honey, vitamin E, coconut-based hair oil, and coconut milk can be effectively used to keep your hair nourished. The dry and cold winter air can make the scalp dry and itchy leading to dandruff, for this, using a combination of tea tree essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut-based hair oil will do wonders. Additionally, onion juice infused with coconut hair oil enhances the power of onion to penetrate deeper into the scalp. Thus, revitalizing the scalp by nourishing the hair roots and minimizing hair breakage.

Oil Your Hair Often

A gentle massage using coconut hair oil can help nourish your root and strands. Massage helps boost blood circulation and nourishes the hair follicles. Thus, stimulating hair growth.

Commit To A Weekly Deep-Conditioning Hair Mask

A nice moisturising mask made using ingredients like honey, eggs, banana or even yoghurt works really well as a natural conditioner. These ingredients moisturise the tresses, promote hair growth while adding shine. Egg yolk has water-soluble peptides that condition and stimulate hair growth while honey is rich in amino acids and vitamins to deeply condition your hair.

Maintain A Well-Balanced Diet

Increase the intake of vitamin-rich foods such as carrots, eggs, pumpkins, and berries. Follow a balanced diet consisting of leafy vegetables, dairy products, meats, and omega-3 fatty acids to keep your mane strong and healthy.

A Cold Water Rinse Is The Easiest Route To Glossy Strands

Hot showers can really pull out the moisture from your hair and make it more vulnerable to breakage and dryness. Hence, wash your hair with lukewarm water, even if your hair feels a little greasy. 

Don’t Overdo The Hair Washing

The drop in temperature leads to a drop in hair moisture levels. Keeping the hair washes limited can help retain the scalp’s natural oils which in turn will help keep the hair nourished. Also, make sure to use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. 

Don’t Leave Home With Wet Hair

“Wet hair is more vulnerable to damage than dry hair. Rubbing your hair vigorously using a towel can also cause damage,” explains Priyanka. “While air drying is best, one can also opt for a blow-dry when in a time crunch, however, keep the temperature settings to cold or mildly warm. Don’t go overboard with heat settings. Whichever way you employ, make sure to dry your hair before stepping outdoors.”

Use Heat Judiciously

“Heat styling products lead to breakage and dryness which is further aggravated due to the cold season. So I would advise you to enjoy your natural hair or try to limit the usage of curling wands and hair straighteners as much as possible and don’t forget to a heat-protection serum before doing it,” says Priyanka.

DIY Masks For Dandruff And Frizzy Hair 

With dipping temperature dip and dry winter air, your scalp loses moisture leading to a host of hair problems like flaky scalp, frizzy and dull hair. But including adequate nourishments in your winter hair care routine can help tackle these winter hair woes. Ahead, find simple DIYs to keep your hair nourished.

A Nourishing Mask

You’ll need:

  • Bananas
  • Honey
  • Yogurt


Step 1: To a bowl, add 2 ripe bananas, ½  cup of yoghurt, and 3 tablespoons of organic honey. Blend all the ingredients until there are no lumps. Add more yoghurt if it seems too thick. 

Step 2: Apply it all over the hair and slap on a shower cap. Leave it on for around 30 mins. Next, rinse with a gentle sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.  

For Shiny Locks

You’ll need:

  • Vitamin E oil
  • Coconut oil


Step 1:  Mix together equal parts of vitamin E oil and coconut hair oil. Then, massage it onto your scalp and hair.

Step 2:  Leave for about 30 mins. Follow it with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to pave your way to sleek, shiny tresses.
