Ladies, the degree to which a myth can parade itself as if it were a truth never fails to amaze me, especially in light of the digital world that we are currently living in. But I won’t lie, as it took me some time to restore the health of my hair because there were some things I had read for years that I believed to be the literal word of God, even if they were really common myths or old wives’ tales. Here are some winter hair myths that you should definitely disregard because the weather is getting colder and winter isn’t that far off. Check ’em out!

Myth #1: Hydration Ain’t That Important When It’s Cold Outside

Ladies, this is a kind of situation where your hair might get drier and more brittle than before due to the harsh cold weather outside and the excessively warm (and dry) heat inside. It’s a big myth that you may abandon your deep conditioners in the fall and winter owing to this. Even so, deep conditioning your hair at least once a week is definitely recommended. Also, use a humidifier while you sleep. Not only will it retain moisture in your hair while you sleep, but it will also be limiting the spread of viruses like COVID-19.

Myth #2: Dry Shampoo Is Your Best Bet During Winters

We are aware that dry shampoo reduces time, absorbs oil, adds volume, and eliminates odour. Just be careful not to “deceive” yourself into believing that dry shampoo should be used only during the winter season in favour of your regular shampoo. Your hair still needs the direct moisture that comes from shampooing and conditioning, even when it’s freezing outside. In fact, when it’s chilly, hair can commonly become quite dry since brisk winds outside and air conditioners inside can both zap moisture. Again, even during the winter, dry shampoo might be helpful, but it should never replace shampooing and conditioning.

Myth #3: Stepping Out With Wet Hair May Give You A Cold

If it wasn’t your mother, I’m very sure it was your nani who warned you against stepping out with wet hair, especially when it’s chilly outside, for fear of contracting a cold. It’s a widespread misconception, but it’s false. While being outside in the cool winter air with wet or even damp hair may not seem ideal, the truth is that the flu is caused by a virus. A fungal infection is what you may develop from having sweaty hair because the fungus likes to thrive in warm, moist settings, but we’ll have to discuss that in another article (do take note of it, though).

Myth #4: Taking A Hot Shower During Winter Season

Nothing feels more comfortable than taking a hot shower on a chilly day. We feel you. Hot water, however, must be avoided at all costs if you want to keep your skin, hair, and scalp moisturised. It can not only deplete your hair of its natural oils but also dry up your scalp, which can cause itching and result in breakage due to dry, brittle hair. A hot water shower might also irritate your scalp, which is something no one wants. Therefore, stick to lukewarm. The right temperature can increase blood flow to the scalp, which may also promote hair growth.

Myth #5: When It’s Cold Outside, A Hat Can Protect Your Hairstyle!

You might have heard that a hairstyle is considered “protective” if it requires no maintenance and protects the ends, which are the oldest part of your hair. This is true, which explains why many of us believe that donning hats, beanies, scarves, etc. is the simplest way to dress in the winter. Both yes and no. There is absolutely no issue with wearing hats, but you must be careful to ensure that the inner fabric of the hat is lined with satin so that it won’t dry out your hair. Oh, and let your hair breathe from time to time. And a moist scalp might cause a fungal infection, which is definitely not ideal if you’re trying to retain some length in time for spring.
