Women are always told things. It’s like a given at this point. We cannot choose for ourselves, but more than anything we just cannot be. The weird part is, the part where we are told how to live our lives, is not just social. At some point, the system institutionalizes this behaviour. For instance, the different courts at different levels have reminded women of their ‘unsaid’ duties in a number of cases. The tonality associated with these judgements make them less hard hitting, but they say a lot about how we see women in our society.
Here’s proof:
1. Wearing sindoor is a must, because the world should know that a woman is married.
2. Women who are married also need to prove that they are married. They HAVE to do this by serving the in-laws.
3. Women should not make choices around their own bodies. For instance, surrogacy is not something you can consider.
4. Since birthing a child is not a choice, not wanting to birth a child isn’t either.
5. Girls should also learn to “control” their sexual urges, because like always, we are responsible for crimes against women.
6. We must not want things in life, in general.
7. And men can expect anything. Women should learn to work for their families – that’s what marriage narrows down to.
8. This also means that the in-laws can say ANYTHING. Women shouldn’t react to bad behavior – it’s a given.
Listen, take notes, learn and then live according to the rest of the world.
