This year we’re heavy into the Gorpcore trend. Originally, and in the first place, the trend rose to popularity in the 2010s. It was written about and coined by writer and editor Jason Chen back in 2017. Gorp is an acronym for trail mix – ‘Good ol’ raisins and peanuts.’ The term Gorpcore is used to describe a trend based on outdoor, hiking and camping activity outfits. If we were to pinpoint which celebrities spearheaded the trend, A$AP Rocky was among the first when he showed up in a full-zip at Fashion Week in January, 2017.
Recently, other celebrities such as Bela Hadid and Hailey Beiber have contributed to the hype of Gorpcore. Waterproof or nylon jackets, along with hiking fleece jackets have become quite a thing now. So, in 2017 when the trend had hit the streets it was described as ‘Defiantly ugly‘ by editor Jason Chen for The Cut. The idea of wearing hiking, sporty-looking clothes with a decent amount of pattern on them isn’t exactly a refined look. It’s very casual, so when the trend originally came into the limelight, it was thought of as a little unappealing.
But now, people are wearing clothing items such as cargo or parachute pants, cargo skirts, fleece zip-ups and hiking or trekking shoes and boots all over the place.
So look up or think of brands such as Salomon, Nike, Merrell (for shoes), The North Face, and Patagonia (for jackets) if you’d like to learn more about the trend.
Personally, I am really enjoying the revival of this trend as it looks incredibly comfortable. And I live for comfort! Also, imagine running errands wearing any of this, all while looking like a total badass and fashion girlie? What a statement?!
We hope Gorpcore sticks around for longer, in fact, I am certain it will as the trend is based on a leisure activity that many enjoy. Fingers crossed!
