Back in the 2000s, one of the most popular outfit choices consisted of wearing a ruffled, flowy or bodycon long top with jeans or flared pants. Maybe the top was also synched at the low waist with a wide belt, with a rather prominent buckle. Then as we approached the late 2010s, 90s fashion came back in style, which meant higher-waisted jeans and pants. I think most of you know where this is going, the re-emergence of high-waisted pants led to tops that were either tucked in or shorter in length, and so the cute, dressy, long tops slowly faded to the background and kind of disappeared.
But the fact that the late 2010s brought in a more minimal look, wearing t-shirts and simpler looks became the norm. So not only did the tops become shorter, top-wear fabrics went from being floral, strappy and flowy to being single-toned/ coloured and designed with more structured material.
This really makes me wonder whether fashion has evolved in the best way possible. I mean, by losing the dressy top, we lost a lot of flavour and personality from our outfits. Because sometimes, wearing a dress, or even dress pants to an event seems unnecessary and kind of over-the-top. Whereas, throwing on your most flattering pair of jeans and a dressy top seems perfect for the club, the restaurant, a drive-around date, a visit to the bookstore and also a brunch with your girlies. Am I right, or am I right?
Though I get it, back when the long top was a trend, there were a few flaws in the lewk it offered. For instance, we don’t really need the puffy sleeves that came along with the top anymore, We also don’t need the strange necklines or even the big belts around our waists. Long story short, the dressy, long tops can only come back if they’re a little less dramatic and more practical (to be more suitable for present-day wear). But as someone who is absolutely done with crop tops, I would like, at the very least, for lengthier shirts and topwear to have a level of existence and significance – because why do I only see shorter-length tops everywhere I turn my head?
The entire long, cute top trend extended to people also wearing dresses over pants or leggings. And while this did make a comeback last year, we’ll be content with simply having longer tops over our cute jeans, rather than dresses.
Maybe we’re just done with uncomfortable clothes that restrict us and I think I speak for most women when I say that while crop tops have helped us create our most glamorous looks, they can also be uncomfortable! Most of us have felt conscious about our stomachs showing or bulging while we’re sitting (in shorter tops). And, maybe I just don’t think it’s worth the 2-hour glory. I love the feeling of feeling confident in a crop top, but the ratio of the time spent feeling confident versus the time spent feeling conscious is just out of balance and at the end of the day, I want to be comfortable and feel my best! I mean why should I compromise on any of these things, can I not look dressed up and cute, and be comfortable at the same time?
So, consider this article as a petition to bring the dressy, long top back. We may not even need the low-waist jeans along with them, just give us the comfort, the glamour and the dressiness of this archived item!
