Move Over Saas-Bahu Sagas, We Need Progressive Shows Like ‘Mere Dad Ki Dulhan’ On TV

Over the years, most of the shows on Indian telly have been all about taking badla, generational leap, manipulation, human transforming into a fly or lizard or even half-human characters. From saas who wouldn’t let you breathe in peace, to bahu who is constantly trying to be the ideal one, we have seen it all. And we need a major shift on Indian television. Well, now that certainly cannot happen break ke baad, but some of the makers sure are taking one step at a time. At the time when progressive storylines are rare, a show like Mere Dad Ki Dulhan is a breath of fresh air. Looks like, waqt badal raha hai, right?

This one is winning many hearts with its unconventional storyline. The plot revolves around a single father and his daughter. Amber, played by Varun Badola is a widowed father who has a daughter named Niya (who turned 24). They meet a middle-aged woman Guneet (Shweta Tiwari) and this is where the show becomes more progressive. This serial shows Shweta Tiwari sign up for a dating app at 40 plus and Varun Badola making coffee for his daughter’s male boss who comes home. Now, how cool is that?

The story of this upcoming show revolves around a girl Kajal Vyas (Megha Ray), who has lost her vision. Yes, you read that right. She is suffering from a disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which has made her lose her eyesight. Kajal, who is very passionate about pursuing her acting career, however, does not let this obstacle stop her. She has an undying desire to get an award for her acting performance and it is only worth watching to see if she is able to do this. How inspiring!

At a time when we mostly care about our bae, this junior babe (Minnie Babita) played by Ashnoor Kaur from Patiala took it upon herself to find a match for her mom (Babita Hanuman Singh) played by Paridhi Sharma. And, guess what? Minnie was successful in finding the right man for her mom who was initially quite reluctant about the idea.

Everest is an Indian TV series that motivates many. Telecasted in 2018, the plot revolves around Anjali Singh Rawat’s expedition to climb Mount Everest. While there is more to the plot, the highlight remains–how Anjali manages to climb the base camp alone, driven by the desire to win her dad’s heart. Now, how brave is that? The ambitious show is symbolic of the ‘Everest’ in everyone’s life–expressing that women can do anything that they want.

Let us not forget that there were a couple of shows in the past, especially in the 90s, and these can put the current ones to shame. A show called Astitva had a career-oriented woman marrying a man almost a decade younger to her. Isn’t that progressive much?

This one came in 2011, as a part of Star Plus’ Nayi Soch campaign. The story of Sandhya (played by Deepika Singh) resonated with every married woman in the Indian household who wished to pursue her dream of becoming an IPS officer after she got married. And guess who stood by her side? Her husband! She overcame all her struggles and did end up becoming an IPS officer.
