Travelling is one of my favourite things to do with my adult money. I’ve just started taking solo trips and while they’re undoubtedly exhilarating, they can also be very tough on your skin. With the hustle and bustle of packing and adjusting to new environments, it’s easy to overlook skincare. But with a few handy tips, you can keep your skin glowing and fresh, no matter your destination.
Here are a few tips that have worked for me this past year. I highly suggest trying them out on your end-of-year vacation – no one wants a fresh breakout on New Year’s Day!
Keep Moisturiser Handy
Moisturiser is essential in maintaining skin hydration during travel. Lather up before and during your journey, plus consider hydrating sheet masks for an extra boost. Products with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are particularly beneficial, but I recommend anything with peptides as well. Drinking plenty of water plays a crucial role in keeping your skin hydrated, so don’t forget to carry your bottle.
Cleansing is Crucial
Transitioning from cold to warm climates means you have to be prepared for an increase in perspiration since it will lead to skin breakouts. A thorough cleanse twice a day helps remove sweat, sunscreen, and pollutants, not just from your face but also from your neck, chest, and back. Using a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils is key.
Lip Balm Is A Lifesaver
The dry air in plane cabins can dehydrate your lips quickly. Regularly applying a nourishing lip balm, especially on long flights, will keep your lips hydrated and prevent chapping. Choose a balm with ingredients like shea butter or vitamin E for added nourishment.
Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
Sunscreen is crucial in protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, even when you’re indoors or in flight. Apply it diligently every few hours, regardless of your location. Opting for a broad-spectrum sunscreen ensures protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
Be Prepared For Breakouts
Travel stress and environmental changes can cause unexpected breakouts. Having a benzoyl peroxide treatment handy can quickly address these issues. This ingredient is effective in targeting acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflammation. Also keeping salicylic acid or an AHA/BHA facewash is a good way to keep small breakouts from turning into something more.
Pamper With A Mask Or Mist
A long flight is the perfect opportunity to indulge in some skin pampering. Applying a hydrating mask or spritzing your face with a facial mist can help combat the dry cabin air, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and moisturised.
Carry Your Own Pillow Covers
As someone who breaks out everyday, one thing that really helped me curb my acne during travelling was making sure that the pillowcase I was sleeping on was as clean as possible. Most of the time you can’t really trust your hotels/hostels, especially if you’re travelling on a budget; I highly recommend carrying your own pillowcases or just putting a clean t-shirt over your pillows before going to bed.
Travel skincare doesn’t need to be complex. With these straightforward products, you can protect and nurture your skin at the same time. So, pack your skincare essentials and get ready to explore the world with your best face forward!
