2021 was the year of experiments. From trying hacks and tricks, to experimenting with headlining makeup looks of the year, beauty enthusiasts had crossed boundaries. (even though it was mostly to jump the fence with 90’s beauty trends). In the year of what felt like infinite lockdowns and the continuation of WFH, we had the opportunity to try, test, love, hate and cancel hundreds of beauty trends. In case you missed it, here’s the lowdown on some of the most viral skin, hair and makeup trends of the year 2021.
Hair Trends
It was high time we put some experimenting into hair and moved past the boring beachy waves. Here are the top 3 hair trends that were viral all over the internet:
The Claw Clip Bun
If you haven’t given in and bought a claw clip (or 20) yet, you’ve won the contest of self-control already. Take the trophy home, girl.
Money Piece Highlights
The feminine urge to get these highlights without caring for brittle face-framing locks >>>>>>.
Curtain Bangs
Sources confirm that curtain bangs supremacy will be reigning over spring summer 2022 as well.
Makeup Trends
Makeup was the area that was the most experimented with. However, the most viral makeup trends turned out to be the ones that hit closer to no-makeup-makeup than runway headlining. Here are our favourites:
Fox Eyeliner
We experimented a lot with eyeliner kajal ideas this year, and fox eyeliner emerged as the clear winner.
Brushed Brows
Brushed brows are the new Instagram brows of the year. Just less tacky, and way less fake looking.
Face Lifting Concealer
While on the hunt for that Hadid facelift effect, the beauty gurus cultivated the viral concealer hack, where you apply a teeny amount of concealer in your tear duct, and under the outer corner of your eye. Blend it in an upwards motion and voila! You’ve aced the simplest, yet most effective facelift technique.
Skincare Trends
Everyone was big on skincare in 2021. From the re-emergence of suncare ethics to the sudden rage of Gua Shas and jade rollers, 2021 saw it all.
Sun protection
Sunscreen has been unofficially awarded as the king of skincare this year, no contest. And you’re not alone if you ended up stocking up on 3 months worth of sunscreen in one go!
Retinol Skincare
If there is anything that skincare enthusiasts focussed on more than sunscreen this year, it was retinol’s anti-ageing skincare.
LED Tech
We also tried a bunch of hi-tech skincare and got addicted to feeling Sci-Fi with LED face masks. Thanks, Kourtney for introducing us all to this world of robot skincare.
