Former President Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. On August 10, he had undergone brain surgery at the Army Research and Referral hospital. He had been on ventilator support since then and tested positive for COVID-19 the same day. On August 19, he developed a lung infection, after which the doctors found his condition started deteriorating. According to reports, his health further declined earlier today after he suffered a septic shock due to his lung infection and finally succumbed to it.
His son, Abhijit Mukherjee, took to Twitter to announce his father’s demise. He wrote, “With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri #PranabMukherjee has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers ,duas & prarthanas from people throughout India ! I thank all of You”.

Soon after the news, tributes started pouring in for the leader. While President Ram Nath Kovind mourned the loss of “one of its worthiest sons”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee, a “scholar par excellence”.
