Aim For Natural Light ALWAYS!

It is lighting that can make or break a photo. Now we know that there is all kinds of equipment to give you perfect lighting for photography, but nothing beats what natural light can do. The radiance that natural light adds to your photos, no artificial light can mimic. So, try to take your pictures in the day and let natural daylight be your best filter. You can also take full advantage of the golden hour – you know that period after sunrise and just before sunset? That soft, diffused light is the best source of natural light you can take pictures in. After all, it’s called the golden hour for good reason!

Be Square

If you’re taking pictures for an Instagram post, the best thing to do would be to click them in the square mode. Unless you want that white border on your posts, or you’re okay with a slightly zoomed-in version of the photo you took after putting in so much effort, make sure to click your photos in square mode. If an Instagram story is what you’re aiming for then your regular photo or portrait mode works well

Find Your Angle

While planning the angle and photo in advance is what leads to the best results, make sure to click the subject from different angles. Sometimes the angle you aim for might not be the best one and giving it a shot (quite literally) from other angles gives you better results and a more aesthetically pleasing picture.

Heard Of The Rule Of Thirds?

This is the golden rule of photography. If you don’t know of it yet, you’ve probably been doing it wrong all this while. The idea is to balance the image. Here’s what you need to do – start with turning on the grid feature on your phone that will help align your photo. It divides the image evenly into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. Then make it a point to place the subject either at the intersection of these lines or along one of the lines and you’re good to go!

Be A Human Tripod

Quite literally. Having a steady hand when taking photos is of utmost importance for still photography. This will give you crisp photos without any sort of motion blur. The best way to do this is to lean on something and take some kind of support to keep you and your camera steady.

Create Your Signature Style

Planning your Instagram grid and giving it a unique style is important because that gives you direction on creating content for your profile. This will not only result in a beautiful grid with well-planned and aesthetic images, but it will help viewers know what to expect from your profile and be drawn to it. There are tons of apps that can help you plan and preview what your profile would look like and schedule posts for your feed.

Choose Your Filters Wisely

A study at Georgia Tech University revealed that IG photos with filters are 21% more likely to be viewed, and 41% more likely to get comments! So, post photos with warm filters and well-defined contrast – research says that such filters work better with viewers in general. Also, make sure not to overdo it with the filters. Keep it simple and scale it down to 3-6 intensity level and not beyond that. The idea is to keep it real, after all.

Familiarise Yourself With Editing Apps

Post-production is as important as taking the photos. The finishing touches to your IG images make all the difference. Even though there are good editing tools on Instagram itself, you could go the extra mile and download editing apps like Snapseed, VSCO, A Colour Story among others and get familiarised with them. This can make a world of a difference to your images, ladies. But make sure to step back and take a look at your edited photo at the end and ensure that it is not “overedited”.
