Salwaar Kameez is one of the most comfortable Indian clothing ever! Although the stitching and the look of a salwaar suit may seem pretty easy, there are various things one needs to keep in mind while wearing a salwaar kameez. To look perfect at your post shaadi functions, here are a few tips for when you want to rock your desi girl style.
1. Don’t compromise on the fitting
A salwaar kameez always needs to have some room for comfort. Avoid opting for a kurta which is fitted or feels too tight. At the same time, do not wear something which is too loose or ill-fitted as that would make you look bulky. Indian wear is all about the perfect fit so do make sure you get it stitched from a tailor you completely trust.
2. Avoid heavy fabrics
Some fabrics like brocade, linen and cotton are heavy and stiff. They don’t do anything to flatter your curves and instead add bulk to your body. Choose fabrics like georgette, chiffon and crepe which are light and flowy and would make movement easier.
Already bought a salwaar suit? Add in a churidaar blue Cotton Straight Suit Set from Biba (Rs 2,239) too to your trousseau.
3. Being too matchy
Don’t wear everything of the same colour. For example, if your kameez is red, don’t go in for a red dupatta, red bangles, red bindi and red earrings. Instead, break the colour tone and balance out your look by opting for contrasting colours.
4. Long Kurta + Patiala= Wrong
Long kurtas do not look good with a patiala salwar. Wearing a long kurta with a patiala salwar hides the multiple pleats and takes away the whole charm of wearing a salwar. While wearing a patiala salwar, the kurta length needs to be above the knees or maximum an inch below the knees.
These White Cotton Patialas (Rs 599) are sure to match all your bright coloured kurtas.
5. No lining
Some fabrics need lining inside them and it is essential for one to get lining done for the same. Either ask your tailor to stitch the lining with the kurta or get one made of the same length as your kurta. Wearing a slip that is visible from the bottom or the sides of your kurta looks extremely unattractive.
6. Over accessorising
We know you want to complete the entire ‘desi girl’ look but over accessorising honestly doesn’t look good. Choose your accessories depending on how heavy or light your suit is and restrict yourself to one statement accessory. If you are wearing a heavy brocade kurta, then avoid wearing too many accessories. Similarly, if your kurta has a heavily embroidered neckline, then it’s best you just wear a pair of earrings instead of a necklace.

7. Not carrying a dupatta
Depending on the style of the suit, one needs to decide whether or not a dupatta is required. Kurtas which have a deep or an elaborate neckline would look odd if worn without a dupatta. If you do not wish to wear a heavy dupatta, you could always choose a plain chiffon dupatta which would also give a sexy glimpse of your neckline. 😉
8. Wrong length of dupatta
As a thumb rule, the length of a dupatta needs to be nothing less than 2.5 metres and a long flowy dupatta helps complete a salwaar suit. When worn sideways, it is supposed to reach your knees and a dupatta any shorter than that would look very odd.
Throw on this Red Cotton Dupatta (Rs 499) and add a pop of colour to your outfit.
9. Wrong footwear
To keep a continuous flow in your outfit, the footwear plays a very important role. Keep the length of your salwaar in mind while deciding your footwear. For instance, wear juttis with an ankle length salwar and heels will go better with a salwar that is long.
These Silver Juttis (Rs 3,200) from Needledust will look gorgeous with most of your festive wear.
