From natural aphrodisiacs like chocolates to dotted condoms and arousal gels, we try every trick in the book to boost our sex lives. But have you ever considered that your sexual and overall health has more to do with your dietary habits than these external aids?
Peeps! Believe it or not, something as basic as probiotics can lift up your sex life. Typically shelved alongside laxatives and other digestion aids (instead of condoms and lube aisles), they’re the hidden gems that exist in the world of sexual wellness. According to a study published in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology, probiotics can contribute to your overall health with a special focus on your sexual health.
Well, we were intrigued. So, we got in touch with Ms. Anam Golandaz, Clinical Dietician, Masina Hospital, Mumbai to delve into the details and the role of probiotics in promoting sexual health. Here are all the deets:
Probiotics= Better Gut Health=Better Sexual Health
For the uninitiated, the gut refers to your gastrointestinal tract that starts from the mouth and ends at the anus. This passage is naturally lined with good bacteria that promote digestion. Now probiotics can help multiply the good bacteria in the gut. “Probiotics contain a host of good bacterias like lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. They work by increasing the number of these microbes in the gut and prevent infections, inflammation, and indigestion,” explains Golandaz. “These gut issues can cause sexual dysfunction. However, probiotics can boost your overall well-being and lead to better sexual health and function,” she adds.
They Can Lift Your Libido
According to a study published in the journal Science Direct, around 95% of serotonin (happy hormone) is produced in the gut. But for the optimal amount of serotonin to be produced, the gut has to be in good shape. “When the gut isn’t functioning well, your serotonin levels can dip. This can lead to a low libido,” says Golandaz. “Including probiotic-rich foods and beverages in your diet can help you boost your gut and sexual health,” she suggests. “Have fermented foods like curd, kimchi, and idlis and drink probiotic-rich beverages like kefir or kombucha before your afternoon meal,” she adds.
They Can Boost Your Stamina
Ever felt “too tired” for sex? Well your low energy levels are to be blamed. However, probiotics can help in this case. “The gut microbe produces vitamin B, which is responsible for your energy levels. A healthy gut through consumption of probiotics can result in a better physical response to sexual desire and increased stamina,” says Golandaz.
All in all, probiotics are great for your overall health. Good sex is only a perk, one that we absolutely love.
