Let me first start by saying that buying condoms when you’re a girl is not easy at all. You get judged by the chemist and everyone standing at the chemist and feel extremely self conscious doing it. It’s almost as if women are too pure to have sex let alone use condoms.
My boyfriend and I had been in a relationship for a really long time but we hadn’t had sex because I wasn’t ready. He respected my decision and like any good boyfriend, never put any pressure on me to do anything I did not want to do. Eventually, one day, I felt like I wanted to take our relationship to the next level and have sex with him. I decided to surprise him with condoms because protection comes first, obviously! I knew he’d be really happy with this surprise.
I had done a lot of research on condoms. The different types, the different flavours, what worked best for which situation, everything! Before this research I had no idea there was something called dotted condoms nor did I know what they did. Equipped with this new found knowledge, I went to the store.
I cannot even begin to describe how awkward it was. Like a naive person, I went to the chemist and said ‘Bhaiya, can you show me the variety you have in condoms?’ As soon I said it, I got the weirdest looks from everyone around me. Everyone looked at me like I was some sort of a pervert. In fact, the guy behind me in line actually started giggling! It was so infuriating and humiliating for me at the same time. I mean, we talk about changing times but a girl can’t even buy condoms?! I quickly bought whatever I liked and rushed out of there. It is safe to say that the first time I bought condoms on my own wasn’t the most pleasant experience of my life.
When I met my boyfriend at his place, I tried not to let the incident get the better of me and affect my mood. I told him I had a surprise for him and asked him to close his eyes and hold his hand out for me. As soon as he did it, I kept the box of condoms on his palm and asked him to open his eyes. As soon as he saw the box of condoms, he was shocked.
‘You really want to do this?’ he asked.
‘Yes, I do!’
‘But how did you manage to buy them? Wasn’t it weird?’
‘Don’t even get me started. If I talk about it, it’ll ruin my mood and trust me, that’s the last thing you want right now.’
He laughed and kissed me and we were making out soon. Since it was the first time either of us were having sex or using condoms, we were both kind of nervous and clumsy. The first condom I tried to put on him, just did not sit right. We were both giggling the whole time we were trying to get the condom on. After ripping the second one by mistake with my nails, we decided to watch a youtube tutorial (yeah, we were lame like that!). Once we’d watched the video and learnt the ‘pinch the tip’ technique, we managed to get the condom on successfully and do the deed.
My first time (both using a condom and having sex) and was nothing like I had expected it to be. We were laughing the whole time and I guess that helped us relax and get rid of our nervousness. While it did hurt a little, it was much better than expected. Guess laughter is the best medicine after all!
