Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding celebrations may have been the talk of the town, with her family, friends, and massive fanbase celebrating the couple’s happy union, but for some, it was all a farce. The Cut, a part of the The New York Times did the unexpected when they published an article titled ‘Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Love for Real?’. For a platform, which in their own words, claims to “cover the issues that matter to women” and “with wit, honesty, and power”, it was a piece written in bad taste. Needless to say, it drew a backlash from all over the world with fans and celebrities standing up for the actress on social media.
Call it ignorance of Indian culture or a major lack of judgement on the publication’s part, this vicious piece should never have been published. At POPxo, we wrote an open letter to the publication, calling them out for the racism and the sexist tone that the article propagated.
Early this morning, the columnist Mariah Smith issued an apology on Twitter saying, “I sincerely apologize to Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, and to the readers, I offended and hurt with my words. I do not condone racism, xenophobia, or sexism. I take full responsibility for what I wrote, and I was wrong, I am truly sorry.”

The Cut, too, tweeted another explanation in response.

This follows in the footsteps of the original statement issued by the publication that read, “An earlier story about Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas did not meet our standards. We’ve removed it and apologize.”
Priyanka Chopra herself had reacted to the original piece at an event saying, “I don’t even want to react or comment. It’s not even in my stratosphere. I’m in a happy place at this moment. These kinds of random things can’t disturb it.”
With movements like Time’s Up and #MeToo at centre stage, we need to now more than ever, uplift and celebrate our fellow women, and not push them down with harsh judgement.
So let’s do our bit, not because we have to, but because we deserve it!
