Women masturbate! They do so whenever they want because it’s their body and its pleasure is entirely their own. Remember Swara Bhasker’s masturbation scene in Veere Di Wedding? The movie released last year and this scene, in particular, created quite a stir. It became a subject of social media scrutiny as some people found it gravely offensive.
It’s been almost a year since Swara was targeted by trolls. They called her a prostitute, they called her shameless, they asked her if she would watch the film with her grandmother. Trollers have attacked her several times but Swara, being the badass that she is, has shut them down with her wit. However, a troll recently attacked the actress’ masturbation scene as part of the voting campaign for the ongoing general election.

On Monday, pictures of people holding placards with Swara Bhasker’s name on them went viral on the internet. The placards read, “This election don’t be like Swara Bhasker. Use your fingers wisely. Vote Wisely.”
Swara’s ‘allegiance’ to the ‘tukde-tukde gang’ (Swara recently campaigned for CP’s Begusarai candidate Kanhaiya Kumar and is a vocal proponent against intolerance and sexism) made her a target for right-wing trolls. However, a bold and unabashed Swara once again took to Twitter to slam these trolls. She shared photos on her own Twitter account and wrote, “Awwwwwww!!!!! My trolls are hard at work again, sweating it out in the heat to popularise my name.. You guys are SO dedicated & sweet!!! Don’t mind the slut-shaming guys.. their imagination is a bit limited… but loving the effort you two.”

Twitterati extended support to Swara by calling out the trolls for their narrow-mindedness. Some even slammed the trolls who consider female sexuality as something to be brushed under the carpet.
The idea of women claiming agency over their body must really be terrifying.
More terrifying than fascists dividing our country and propagating violence against minorities. https://t.co/9xBlSWDFgq— Trisha Shetty (@TrishaBShetty) April 30, 2019
So @ReallySwara acted in a movie and that movie had a scene – why have we attached her identity to that goddamn scene – Matlab why … someone explain why …

Because female sexuality terrifies us.

A hope-filled story of two people who shared the same placard, sunglasses and brain. They are talking about a happy ending. Will they get it? Maybe not. https://t.co/3UdS2JwtOR

There have been similar instances in Indian cinema before. The most recent example being that of Kiara Advani and Neha Dhupia in Lust Stories. But Swara has been trollers favourite target.
