Three months have passed since actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging in his Mumbai home, and the investigation surrounding his death has only become murkier. While his therapist revealed that the Kai Po Che actor was undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder, the media and his fans have created a narrative of their own. First, they blamed nepotism in Bollywood for the actor’s death, and went after Karan Johar and star kids.
Now, his family believes that his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was responsible for his ‘murder’. They have accused her of laundering his funds, forcibly drugging him and ‘controlling’ him. Last week, the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the case from the Mumbai Police. While the CBI has been tight-lipped about their ongoing investigation, it appears that the media has already declared Rhea guilty.
One main point of contention was the Europe trip that Sushant, Rhea and her brother took last year. Netizens have alleged that Rhea forced Sushant to pay for a lavish trip for herself as well as her brother. In an interview with a leading media publication, Rhea shared her side of the story about the trip.
She explained that she was supposed to go to Paris for a fashion shoot, and the brand had already paid for her business class tickets as well as her hotel rooms. “But Sushant thought it was a good idea to make a Europe trip out of this. Sushant cancelled those tickets and booked first-class tickets. Rest of the trip, he paid for the hotels. He wanted to and I didn’t have a problem with that. Ultimately, he lived king-size,” she said.
She, however, added that she did have a problem with ‘the amount he was spending’.
She explained that Sushant lived like a ‘star’ and ‘loved it’. A few years ago, he took a similar extravagant trip to Thailand with his guy friends. “Mujhse pehle bhi, ek do saal pehle, woh 6 ladko ke saath Thailand gaya thaa (before me, he went on a trip to Thailand with 6 other boys one or two years ago). He spent around 70 lakh on that trip. He took a private jet also. It was his lifestyle choice. Aap kaun hote hain yeh bataane waale ki woh kya karega? Uski marzi (who are you to tell him what he should do? It’s his choice). He lived like a star. Like a king. He loved it,” she said
Rhea questioned why she was being accused of ‘forcing him’ to pay, when he took similar luxurious trips with his friends as well. “Did the boys also force him in that trip, then? Aur ji nahi, I was not living off Sushant Singh Rajput’s money. We were living like a couple,” Rhea added.
Rhea is yet to be called in for questioning by the CBI, but it is likely to happen soon. And we trust the authorities to do their job because the speculations and social media trials aren’t helping anyone.
