8 *Genius* Styling Hacks To Make You Look Taller In Indian Wear This Shaadi Season!

October is my favourite month. It’s got festivals and weddings and romantic evenings and crisp, light weather, all in its fold. Plus, I get to wear those beautiful Indian silhouettes in all their bright glory. But I am a short girl, who often worries that she’ll bury under those endless drapes. If you’re like me, these styling tips will come to your rescue, for they will make you look taller in Indian wear, this shaadi season.

1. If you’re planning to drape a saree…

Go for a silk or a crepe saree that’d cling to your figure and take its shape, unlike a cotton saree that’d make you look bulkier and shorter. Also, avoid wearing a heavily embroidered saree. Tie your saree low so that a bigger part of your waist becomes visible giving the illusion of a taller torso.

POPxo Recommends: Paisley Print Crepe Saree (Rs 1,086)

2. The blouse and its many necklines!

Shorter cholis that end right at your chest and make space for your waist to show give the illusion of a longer torso. Opt for necklines that flaunt your collar bone and show a hint of your cleavage too. Stay away from bandhgalas and choker style necklines if you’re worried about appearing shorter. Take your pick from the semi – deep neckline family, be it sweetheart, V-neck, round or U-shaped.

3. How to choose the perfect kurta?

Ideally, any kurta that you choose should end mid-calf to ensure that you do not look short in it. Make good use of slits that are so in trend right now. The longer the slit, the taller it’ll make you appear. Anarkalis that cinch at the waistline give a perfect fit and tend to make you look taller than others that don’t.

4. What to do when you want to wear a lehenga?

Rules of wearing the choli remain the same for the lehenga and the saree. It’s the dupatta that you have to be careful about. Do not drape it like a shawl. Wear it like a pallu instead so that it adds length to your body and makes you appear taller. Make sure that the lehenga skirt is well-fitted as well, because looser garments make you look shorter.  Avoid kaftan tops, batman sleeves or billowy skirts while wearing a lehenga.

5. What’s your bottom wear choice?

Churidaars and leggings elongate your legs and give length to your body shape, which in turn makes you look taller. Salwars and pants on the other hand are broader and looser garments that add width, but no height to your body. However, if you love wearing wide-legged palazzos, you can team them with fitted tunics and heels so that their flowy cut and long hemline accentuates your height instead of diminishing it.

POPxo Recommends: Dull Pink Palazzos (Rs 999)

6. Accessorize right!

Earrings, necklaces or even bags – if any one of these goes wrong, your entire look can come apart. Be careful when you’re choosing your accessories too then. Try to carry one statement piece, be it some solid huge earrings or just an eye-catching bag. Don’t over-do your accessories for it will make your entire look appear cluttered. Avoid oversized bags or choker necklaces that only make you appear shorter.

POPxo Recommends: Silk Embroidered Potli (Rs 390)

7. Prints and colors and patterns for the win!

Avoid horizontal stripes and embrace vertical ones, for the former will make you look broader, while the latter will add height to your frame. Also, stay away from bold prints that have too much going on in them. They will make you look bulkier and shorter than you are. Go for solid colors, pin dots, small floral prints, gingham checks and monochrome color combinations to appear taller.

8. Add extra inches with the right hairstyle!

But you already knew this, didn’t you? If you’d tie up your hair in a high bun or just tease your hair with a back comb and make a little pouf, you’d add about two extra inches to your frame. Now that’s pretty easy!
