While King Charles III took his coronation oath on May 6, it was Sonam Kapoor’s presence at the event that had us more intrigued. The actress was invited to the ceremony to deliver a spoken word performance. We were waiting to get a glimpse of Sonam at the event and her mom, Sunita Kapoor finally posted a video.
In the video that is now going viral on social media, Sonam is introduced as “Indian cinema’s biggest star.” The actress then takes over the stage and commences her speech with “Namaste”. She continues, “Our Commonwealth is a union. Together we are one third of the world’s people, one third of the world’s ocean, one quarter of the world’s land. Each of our countries is unique. Each of our people is special. But we choose to stand this one. Learning from our history, blessed by our diversity, driven by our values and determined to build a more peaceful, sustainable and prosperous future for everyone, where every voice is heard. Without further ado, here’s welcoming the incredible voices from across the Commonwealth.”
Here, check out the video:
The video has been reposted by a Reddit user and Sonam is getting trolled on the thread. People are calling her out for glorying a family that colonised India.
Others are simply not pleased with the speech:
Meanwhile, some are calling Sonam out for the stark difference in the pictures posted on her Instagram feed and how she looks in the video:
Admittedly, partaking in the coronation celebration of a former coloniser is a grey area. Proudly referring to India as a “commonwealth” nation has only reminded everyone that we were a former colony. Perhaps, Sonam could have chosen her words more wisely. However, I can’t blame her for touching up her pictures or photoshopping them a little. All the mean comments on how she looks in the video are just proving my point.
As an actress, you are always expected to look perfect. Given Sonam was representing the country for an event that the entire world had eyes on, I can only imagine the kind of pressure she was under. Maybe if we stop over-analysing everything the actresses post, they’d stop photoshopping their pics as well. Honestly, it’s a two-way street!
