With the new year comes a renewed sense of ‘time for me to get in shape’. Fresh gym memberships and setting a few workout goals are some of the first steps I take towards making this resolution a reality, but this year, I really want to make sure my workout plans align with my skin goals! Most of us tend to overlook post-work out skincare, but after experiencing so many ill-timed breakouts because of the sweat and dirt, I’ve realised that a good post-workout skincare routine is a very essential aspect of a good workout session.
Sweating it out is great, but not when it leads to acne and skin issues. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of tips to keep in mind to keep your skin glowing even after a rigorous gym session.
The Golden Rule: Wash Your Hands
Before even thinking about touching your face, give your hands a good scrub. Gym equipment, yoga mats and even the floor of your bedroom are a breeding grounds for bacteria. All of these can transfer to your face and lead to fungal acne that spreads before you can say stop! So wash your hands before you touch your face – it’s too easy of a step to miss.
Cleansing: The Cornerstone To Clear Skin
Post-workout, your skin is extra vulnerable to impurities. The best way to being your routine is with a gentle cleanse to remove sweat, bacteria, and dirt. For big pores, go in with a single wash with a gentle cleanser.
If you have smaller pores and are less likely to clog them, a double cleanse method will work – you can start with an oil cleanser, followed by a salicylic acid-based/water based face wash. But, steer clear of harsh scrubs – they’re so 2023.
Soothing: Apply a Gentle Serum
After cleansing, soothe your skin with a nurturing serum. If you have notoriously dry skin look for ingredients like peptides or hyaluronic acid.
For blackhead prone skin, I recommend a toner and some salicylic acid. As for oily skin, try a rosewater face mist for light hydration that does not overwhelm your skin.
Hydration: Remember To Moisturise
Sweating dehydrates your skin more than you realise. Replenish it by applying a good moisturiser. This not only hydrates but also helps in maintaining clear, healthy skin. Depending on your skin type, either go in with a lightweight gel based moisturiser (oily/sensitive skin) or a heavier oil based one (dry skin).
Beyond the Face: Body Care
Your skincare routine shouldn’t stop at your face. Going to the gym often causes body issues like fungal acne, backne and rashes. To combat this, alternate between antibacterial and antifungal soaps and body washes for your post workout showers. Products like anti-dandruff shampoos can also double as body washes to prevent body breakouts.
Your post workout skincare is as crucial as your workout. It’s about cleansing, nurturing, and protecting your skin from everything that can go wrong after a heavy set. With these simple steps, the goal is to make sure you’re doing everything in your power to prevent a fresh, sweat induced breakout!
