Shilpa Shetty made her debut in Bollywood with Baazigar in 1993. Honestly, the scene where SRK threw her off the building has left many 90s kids scarred for life and scared of heights. However, the first thing that comes to our minds when we think about Shilpa in the 90s era has to be the catchy song Chura Ke Dil Mera (it’s quite controversial now for all the wrong choices of words).
Interestingly enough, mulling over Shilpa and her good ol’ days, we are instantly reminded of a super stylish diva and her amazing dance moves. But, what about her acting? Sadly, we don’t recall much of it–because we saw her mostly in male-oriented movies playing insignificant characters. In a recent interview, Shilpa explained, “Back in the 1990’s, I have to be honest we were all typecast, either you were a very good actress and you would get those kinds of films or you would be typecast in those glamorous roles. And I was the latter, so nobody really took me seriously to offer me the main protagonist role.”
When it really came down to acting, Shilpa made an ever-lasting impression for the first time with her acting skills in Dhadkan. From her iconic blue wedding lehenga to her gorgeous sarees in shades of white, Shilpa not only looked stunning in the movie but was also exceptionally convincing as the character of Anjali. Talking about the same, she said, “The game-changer for me was ‘Dhadkan’ where Dharmesh (director Dharmesh Darshan) actually kept the glamour but he wanted it all covered. So funny enough, he was the first to tell me that ‘I want you to look glamorous but in an Indian outfit’… That changed the entire perspective of people and that film went on to become a huge hit and then I did a lot of films after that where there were meatier roles but, honestly I didn’t care, for me, it was just work and I was really young then.”
In 2007, Shilpa Shetty made history by becoming the first Indian actress to win Big Brother Celebrity season 5. Since then, she has given some fine performances in movies like Life in a Metro before getting married to Raj Kundra in 2009. Even though the last movie Shilpa did was in 2007, the Apne actress always stayed in limelight by releasing fitness videos, cookery shows, judging dance reality shows, and other gigs.
Now, the actress is all set to make her comeback on the big screen with her upcoming movies Hunagama 2 and Nikamma. Both movies were scheduled to release in mid-2020 but were postponed due to the pandemic. Shilpa even posted on Instagram informing her fans that she is returning to the silver screen after 13 years. She wrote in the caption, “Yesssssssss, it’s true! My sabbatical of 13 long years comes to an end.. I am so excited to announce that the film you will see me next in is #Nikamma.”
Welcome back to the big screen Shilpa! Can’t wait to see you in the theatres!
