Talking about mental health openly is the need of the hour and yet, tougher than you think. Celebrities like Selena Gomez, Deepika Padukone and Lady Gaga have been making conscious efforts to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. It’s not easy and it takes a lot of courage to stay under the scrutiny of people and their judgement all the time. However, Selena has never shied away from speaking her mind. The singer has always been vocal about her mental health, emotions, and going to therapy. She’s certainly an inspiration for all her fans!
Selena has openly talked about her breakup with Justin Bieber in the past, and also about her struggles with depression and anxiety. In 2017, she revealed that she had enrolled in a treatment facility to help with her panic attacks, anxiety, and depression. In a past interview, Selena has admitted that she does not believe her depression will ever really end. She considers it a constant battle and has made her peace with it.
Over this weekend, in honour of World Mental Health Day, Selena hosted an Instagram Live session with Dr Vivek Murthy, surgeon general to President Obama. She discussed depression and its association with loneliness. During the session, she spoke candidly about her mental health, struggles of self-isolation and quarantine. She said, “In the beginning, I couldn’t deal with it [quarantine] that well. I kind of went into a bit of a depression.”
She explained how her extrovert nature made things difficult for her. “I’d say I’m a big-time extrovert so I get that it’s a bit harder, I mean, my job is a lot of travel, connecting with people, making people happy, and that makes me happy, so it has been a struggle,” she said.
Selena is certainly not alone in this. 2020 has not been kind to many, and a lot of us have faced severe anxiety while staying packed within the four walls of our homes. But, to have a celebrity talk about their vulnerable side, truly makes us feel like we’re all in this together.

And then I guess it just forced me to have that time. And again, I’ve been able to spend time with those quality people a lot more than I ever have. And spending a lot more time with my family, and I almost feel like I’ve become normalized in this situation that’s not normal.”
