Say CHEESE! 6 Ways to Freshen Up Your Smile

Between touch-ups of your favourite lip colour and multiple rounds of mochaccino, your teeth often tend to be ignored. However, remember that off-white or yellowish teeth can totally ruin your otherwise perfect selfie! Here’s a quick lowdown on what to do and what to avoid to freshen up your smile. Get ready to say cheese!

1. Tweak Your Diet

First up, here’s something that you need to know: your diet can affect your smile. Pigments in cola, ketchup and soy sauce cause stains on your teeth. So avoid eating these as much as you can—if you can’t help but binge sometimes, then make sure you add a side of spinach, broccoli, or lettuce. These veggies have mineral compounds that form an invisible, undetectable film over the teeth that can prevent staining and long-term problems.

2. Smokers Beware

If you smoke, the wise thing would be to stop now. Not only can it lead to grim diseases but also cause excessive staining on your teeth (tobacco, I tell you!). If you can’t kick the habit so easily, step up and take extra care of your teeth by getting your teeth cleaned every month.

3. The Toothy Superfoods

Add foods such as celery, carrots, and apples to your diet—not only are they good for health but these crunchy fruits can also act as nature’s own toothbrush. They can help put a full stop to plaque naturally and produce saliva (your mouth’s wonder fluid!).

4. Drink Plenty of Water

If you are already smoking/or eating stain-causing foods, minimize damage by rinsing your mouth properly after your meal/snack and then down a glass or two of water. Chewing on sugarless gum can also help remove staining food particles.

5. Get Your Sparkle On

If you feel that your teeth are not just as sparkly as you want them to be, try this quick fix: take a pinch of salt and combine it with a teaspoon of mustard oil. Mix thoroughly and swipe a layer on your teeth (without swallowing). Rinse out your mouth completely after 5-10 minutes. Brushing your teeth with whitening toothpastes may help too. Try Colgate Visible White Toothpaste or Close Up Diamond Attraction Toothpaste.

6. Seek Professional Help

Don’t skip that dentist’s appointment, however tempting it might be. Getting your teeth polished every six months is the smartest thing you could be doing for your chompers. It basically involves smoothening the surface of your teeth; it is a fairly painless process and is not too heavy on the pocket. The benefit: it keeps your gums healthy and your smile bright. If you opt for a whitening treatment at the dentist’s office, consider a dental deep-cleaning beforehand. Remember your teeth benefit from exfoliation too!
