This Is How Rupali Ganguly Reacted When She Was Offered Anupamaa & We’re Shook

If I am being completely honest, I’ve been hooked to Star Plus’ Anupamaa for quite some time now. I mean it’s one of the few serials on television right now that is beyond your regular saas-bahu drama. The plot showcases the journey of a dedicated sanskari bahu who divorces her cheating husband and sets out to find her own identity. It’s no wonder that the progressive show has been ruling the TRP for some time now. The show has even made its protagonist Rupali Ganguly a popular household name. It’s hard to believe that Rupali was missing from our television screen for seven years. TW, did you know when the makers of Anupamaa approached Rupali for the show, she was completely taken aback?

Rupali, last seen in Parvarrish, had quit the show to raise her son. In talks with a leading daily, Rupali revealed that when Rajan Shahi, the show’s director, approached her for the role, she was completely shocked by the offer. She even revealed that it was her husband who encouraged her to take up the show. She said, “When I spoke to my husband (Ashwin Verma) about it, he told me that I hadn’t got my due as an artist and said, ‘You should take it up and make us proud’. He took a break from his work so that I could get back to acting. In short, he gave me the wings to fly.”

Rupali even added that she was a little hesitant initially because she wasn’t sure that a 40-year-old lead would work on TV. “To be 40 plus and not have a 26-inch waist when you’re playing the lead can be challenging at times. I always wondered if it would work.” However, she added that she is glad to see the positive change in the industry.

Well, we gotta say that we’re really glad Rupali agreed to play Anupamaa. I, for one, cannot imagine anyone else essaying this role.
