It Turns Out We’ve All Been Washing Our Faces Wrong, Here’s How To Do It Properly

We know, we know – facial cleansing is one of those basic beauty routines that you can do half asleep, right? Rub, rinse, pat dry, and you’re basically good to go. Step 1: Pull Your Hair Back

You don’t want your strands to get in the way.

Step 2: Thou Shalt Wash Thy Hands First

Imagine wiping down a surface with a dirty rag. Sounds gross, right? Similarly, when you wash your face with unclean hands, you’re putting that dirt and grime around your face. Wash your hands first!

Step 3: Remove Your Makeup Beforehand

Truth time: Removing makeup is oodles less fun than applying it. However, it’s crucial to remove your makeup beforehand. Slather on a cleansing balm to melt your makeup and then rinse off.

Step 4: Use Lukewarm Water

Using hot water may feel nice, but it’s not doing your skin any favors. Hot water is dehydrating – it strips natural oils from your skin too quickly. Lukewarm water, on the other hand, is warm enough to help loosen dirt and sebum without stripping your skin.

Step 5: Wet Your Face Depending On The Product

Depending on the type of cleanser you’re using, you can either apply your cleanser first or your can wet your face first. If using a balm or oil you can apply it directly to your skin and massage in light, circular motions. When using a foam cleanser, you should wet your face first and lather a dime size of cleanser in between your palms until you get a nice foamy consistency. You should cleanse your skin for 30 seconds to a minute.

Step 6: Gently Massage In The Cleanser

Circular motions with medium pressure work best. Focus on problem areas like the T-zone, hairline, jawline, and even behind the ears and down the neck. Rather than scrubbing vigorously for 20 seconds, spend a minute gently massaging in circular motions.

Step 7: Rinse!

Rinse your palms clean of the cleanser and wet with water, and then rub the water in upward motions all over your face.

Step 8: Pat Dry Your Face With A Clean Towel

After cleansing, it’s best to pat your skin dry with a clean towel designated for your face and not your body. As the skin on our face is so delicate, take care to pat it dry with a soft towel. And it doesn’t need to be bone-dry when you’re done. It’s okay to leave a thin layer of moisture on your skin since the products you apply next will seal it in. Make it a habit to use a fresh towel each day to avoid problem-causing bacteria and germs.

Step 9: Apply Other Skincare

Apply your active ingredients to your face and then apply a hydrating moisturiser and don’t forget your SPF during the day.

Easy-peasy, right?
