Baahubali, Pushpa: The Rise, RRR…What do all these films have in common? A larger-than-life hero, killer visuals, a villain to crucify and a lot of masala. Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera does this all and does it well. While Ranbir Kapoor is best known for his coming-of-age films, he has broken the mould with his latest release. A few minutes into the film and you’ll see that this period action film is riding on RK’s shoulders. Well, he has delivered! The Rockstar actor is in his finest form in the action period film and we have evidence to support this.
5 Reasons Why Shamshera Is Through And Through A Ranbir Film
The Iconic Entry Scene
Amongst the countless whistles and claps, RK’s entry scene was a treat for all his fans (including me!) and you can see him as the next massy superstar. With brooding eyes, ominous background score and menacing expressions, there was nothing out of place as Ranbir appeared on the big screen. It was one of those countless moments in the film where you feel grateful that filmmaker Karan Malhorta didn’t go for the online streaming route as this film was made for the silver screen.
Sandstorms, Fights & Drama
TBH, there was something outlandish yet amazing in every frame as the audience followed Shamshera and Balli’s respective journeys. However, the part where Ranbir shone the brightest was the sandstorm fighting sequences. The actor has worked hard to appear muscular in the film and his efforts paid off. NGL, the way Shamshera’s fight scenes were shot with so much detail and effort, it was a visual spectacle in its truest sense! There are plenty of jaw-dropping moments in the film. In every action sequence, Ranbir was credible and fiery. P.S a special shoutout to the train robbery scene in Shamshera as it was every bit captivating. And RK totes killed it!
Double Role, Double The Magic
Ranbir played both father and son in the film, which chronicled a rousing uprising against the British in pre-independent India. While both the characters had distinctive traits, there were eerie similarities as they commenced their journeys. Playing a double role in an action flick is always a huge gamble but in this case, it paid off well. On a personal note, Shamshera is far more fierce than Balli and this is not up for debate.
Sanju V/S Sanjay Dutt
While most of us love Ranbir for his boy-next-door roles, he outshone everyone in Shamshera including Sanjay Dutt? Sanjay as Daroga Shuddh Singh was menacing, unapologetic and ruthless but somehow lacked the cruel streak of Kancha Cheena in Agneepath. After a few violent graphic screens, the character appears caricaturish and it was hard to not see him as a two-dimensional villain. However, Ranbir’s character had emotional depth even as a tribal dacoit and that was the game-changer in the film.
Nod To 70s/80s Bollywood
Shamshera is a nod to old-time Bollywood masala films with a modern twist and it is a treat! Ranbir was careful enough to make his characters believable. And at the same time, he managed to pull the larger-than-life troupe that was widespread in Bollywood in the 70s and the 80s. Right from his diction to his distinctive walking style, the film truly belonged to Ranbir.
Even though Shamshera struggled with the lengthy screen time and screenplay, it was hard to take eyes off Ranbir. For once and for all, he proved that good things take time!
