“We are living in a time where everyone is desperate to get offended.” I heard this in a Jaipur Literature Fest session almost half a decade ago. The thought stayed with me ‘coz it did make a lot of sense. Every day we come across instances of unwarranted outrage. Some are raging against how celebs name their babies. Others want to shut down the entirety of Bollywood. In fact, in 2020 we also had full-fledged rallies against coronavirus because why not? Well, we anticipated similar drama when pictures of Ranveer Singh’s bare-all photoshoot went viral on social media last week. However, the reaction was quite alright and barring some medieval comments, everyone seemed to love Ranveer’s pictures. Guess, it was the silence before the storm because someone is now seeking to file an FIR against the actor.
The complainant is an NGO and has claimed that Ranveer’s photoshoot has “hurt sentiments” and insulted “the modesty of women.” They add, “This act of the accused person created shame in eyes of women at large and [he is responsible for] publishing and transmitting sexually explicit material.”
Please, do not even get me started on how ludicrous all of this sounds. I, as an Indian woman, can attest to the fact that Ranveer’s photoshoot did not “create shame” in my eyes. Neither did it hurt my modesty. In fact, I find it really offensive that a naked man can in any way hurt my modesty. He is somewhere in Mumbai, posing for pictures, unaware that I exist and typing this in my Delhi office. If this can do anything to my “modesty” maybe we should revisit the idea and relook at how we treat and see women in India. Thankfully, the internet is with me on this and hella amused at the complaint.
