Radhika Apte is emerging as the reigning queen of OTT platforms. Over the years, the indie darling has impressed fans and critics alike with her unconventional projects.
The actress, who has been riding high on the success of Sacred Games and Andhadhun, has bagged yet another big project. And no, it isn’t a Netflix India series. Looks like Radhika is all set to make some new connections! According to media reports, the actress will feature in Apple TV’s upcoming series Shantaram, which is based on Gregory David Roberts’ bestselling novel of the same name.
Reportedly, the series will have at least 10 episodes and the production will begin in October in Australia and India. If that doesn’t excite you, this certainly will. Radhika will star in the series alongside Hollywood star Charlie Hunnam! We’ll also see Richard Roxburgh in a pivotal role.
The novel by Gregory David Roberts was published in 2003 and was influenced by actual events that took place in the author’s life. For those of you who haven’t read the book, the plot revolves around an Australian bank robber (Lindsay Ford) and heroin addict, who escapes from Pentridge Prison and goes to Bombay, India. There he finds a new life in the slums, bars and, of course, the disorderly Bombay underworld.
In the adaptation, Charlie will be playing the protagonist, Lindsay Ford, and Richard, who is known for his roles in Mission: Impossible 2 and Moulin Rouge!, will be seen as Detective Sergeant Marty Nightingale of the Australian Federal Police (responsible for capturing escaped convicts). Radhika will play Kavita, an Indian journalist searching for answers.
The novel has sold six million copies and has been published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide. Considering the popularity of the book, it’s only fair that the series already has a tax incentive of $5 million from the Australian government.
Justin Kurzel will reportedly direct the first two episodes and we can expect a 2020 release for Shantaram.
Radhika recently featured in The Wedding Guest alongside Dev Patel. She will next be seen in Honey Trehan’s Raat Akeli Hai with Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Well done, Radhika!
