With digital shows and scaled-down collections, fashion weeks in India went rather low-key in the past year and a half. All this while, the designers tried their best to keep up the excitement but the glitz was missing and we definitely needed a showstopping movement that shakes us out of the fashion lull. Well, that’s exactly what happened last night. Kareena Kapoor Khan took over the ramp for ace couturier Gaurav Gupta to close the winter-festive 2021 edition of FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week.
For the finale show, Kareena was dressed in ivory, mermaid-cut gown complete with silver and taupe bead detailing all over the body. It had a dramatically exaggerated neckline that stood out for us as the highlight of the look with the designer’s signature 3-D details. Pictures and videos from Kareena’s show-stopping ramp walk are currently crowding our social media feed and we are in absolute awe. Here is why both the fashion and entertainment industry desperately needed this moment:
Age Is Just A Number
While Kareena is often spotted in Gaurav Gupta creations, the last time she turned showstopper for the designer was way back in 2015. A lot has happened since then. In the past six years, Kareena has become a doting mother to two, has rung in her forties, and just like all of us has survived a pandemic. It is almost a new world order now. Things are definitely not the same. Well, maybe apart from Bebo’s characteristic charm and the confidence with which she claims every single space that she is in.
In an industry, that is notoriously infamous for its ageism against women, Kareena has successfully managed to dodge its constructs and continues to reign the industry with her own rules. She is perhaps the only actress who has not started settling for “more mature” roles just because of her age or the fact that she is now a mother. In fact, it has been just seven months since the birth of little Jeh, and Kareena is already back to basics, taking one assignment after another, and acing them all.
‘Redefine’ing It All
Gaurav Gupta’s latest collection ‘Redefine’ takes inspiration from the sea and reflects upon the endless expanse of the ocean. The collection is made from recycled ocean plastic and the designer conceptualised it in the Adamans while taking inspiration from the aquatic life. He is an advanced diver and closely observed the sea life to recreate the corals, fins, and jellyfish-like details in the costumes. This collection is particularly important for the message of sustainability as well as the artistic finesse that went into its making. With his designing genius, Gaurav is constantly ‘redefining’ fashion and Kareena sounds like the perfect muse given that she too is redefining the meaning of being a woman actor in the Indian film industry.
