It is almost 2022, can we please get rid of sexism? TBH, we are often left outraged with the way women are treated by certain sections of society. Despite a woman’s individual achievements, many people still refer to her as ‘wife of someone’ and that’s not just shocking but also misogynistic.
Recently, our own desi girl Priyanka Chopra faced a chauvinistic statement while promoting her latest film The Matrix Resurrections. An online publication wrote about her part in the film but referred to her as the wife of Nick Jonas. PC took a screenshot of the article and posted it on the ‘Gram. She wrote “Very interesting that I’m promoting one of the most iconic film franchises of all time and I’m still referenced as “the wife of…”
Priyanka then tagged hubby Nick and wrote, “Please explain how this still happens to women? Should I add my IMDb link to my bio?”
There are so many things to unpack here. Firstly, kudos to Priyanka for not letting this slide! We can’t believe even in 2021, some people are still stuck in the dark ages. Every woman out there is ‘someone’ not just the ‘wife of someone or ‘daughter of someone’ or ‘sister of someone’. It is not acceptable!
This is not the first time that PC has faced something so sexist. Back in 2018, an online magazine labelled the actress as a “global scam artist” when she got married to Nick. Later in a 2019 interview, Priyanka spoke about the incident and said, “I didn’t comment on it at the time. But I went up to the hotel room to find Nick, Joe, Sophie Turner and my mum furiously responding to the article on their phones. They were like, ‘These b*******! How dare they?’ I thought, ‘I’m having a great moment, nothing is going to burst my bubble'”
The Mary Kom actress added, “Just because I’m famous, don’t I have the ability to be proud of being a newlywed without people saying that I’m using my marriage?” NGL, Priyanka never ceases to amaze us with her fearlessness. All we can say ATM is ‘you go, gurl.’
