When you head to the gym, you typically have one thing on your mind: taking care of your body. But we’re here for another friendly reminder: while you’re taking care of your body, remember your skin! Our skin is a robust hero that goes into overtime for us, but tbh it needs a helping hand. This is especially true when exercising, when dirt, bacteria, and sweat from your fitness routine can build up on your face, which can lead to breakouts, rashes, and a slew of icky problems. Intense! Now, of course, that doesn’t mean you should scratch the gym entirely. Because health is wealth, right?
So here we’ve lined up the best way to take better care of your skin before, during, and after a good sweat sesh. Grab your dumbbells, hit play on your gym playlist, and let’s get to it.
If you’ve just woken up or you’re not wearing makeup, do a quick wipe with micellar water on a cotton pad or spack your face with a little water. It’s important that your skin is clean, so if you feel like your skin needs it, do a gentle cleanse with a milk or gel cleanser. Likewise, if you work out in the p.m. double cleanse to remove all your makeup. You can go for a cleansing balm to melt away the makeup. Then, follow it up with a mild cleanser.
Just because you’re working out doesn’t mean your skin shouldn’t get a little extra love. We love using lightweight, protective and hydrating formulas while we work out, like a Vitamin C serum, or an antioxidant-rich gel moisturiser. These help to protect your skin from free radicals that attack during exercise. Avoid any formula that’s too rich and heavy, as they could feel uncomfortable while you sweat.
If you’re working out in the sun or going out for a jog, SPF is essential. We recommend opting for a mineral sunscreen which means when you sweat, your eyes shouldn’t sting. Finally don’t forget a little lip balm to keep your lips moist and prevent cracking. And, always tie your locks up to avoid getting hair in your face and hair products from mingling with your skin.
We know that after working out we often have places to be, but it’s so important to wash your face post-sweat sesh as soon as possible. If you’ve washed your face before working out, you can opt for a hydrating cleanser to replenish your skin while preventing breakouts and clogged pores. Finish your cleanse by splashing your face with cold water, which helps to shrink blood vessels and tighten pores.
We’ve said it a thousand times but it bears repeating: drink plenty of water to hydrate your body and skin. The best hydration comes from within. Then, slather on a hydrating toner or a serum. Start with a toner that’s soothing and calming. Follow with a lightweight serum containing hyaluronic acid. These help hydrate and repair the skin after the stress of working out.
Now that your skin is well hydrated, lock it all in with a moisturiser. We prefer to stay away from thicker formulas post-workout (save those for nighttime). Instead, stick to gel-like or lightweight moisturisers which help to reduce redness and balance your skin. Now enjoy that glow-up and be proud of yourself for working out and giving your skin some TLC at the same time.
Glowing skin and the gym: not mutually exclusive!
