Smriti Mundhra’s powerful storytelling has made her one of the most sought-after filmmakers across the world. Smriti started her award-winning career with her directorial debut, A Suitable Girl! It world premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and received the Albert Maysles Best Documentary Director prize. Since then, she has produced and directed many critically-acclaimed short films, series, and documentaries. The Columbia graduate runs her own production house, Meralta Films and isn’t afraid of touching difficult subjects. Netflix’s Indian Matchmaking is proof! It is Smriti’s commitment to truth that makes her films and documentaries truly memorable. She scored an Academy nomination as well as a Critics’ Choice Award for St. Louis Superman. Given her current pace, it won’t be too long before Smriti actually clinches her first Oscar!
In 2022, Smrti won the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children’s Programs. She won the award for her docuseries, Through Our Eyes (2021) based on the Vietnam war! She again made waves in 2023 with Netflix’s The Romantics, a docu-series that celebrates the legacy of Yash Chopra. Committed to perfection, Smriti was persuasive enough to get Aditya Chopra to give his first on-screen interview in three decades. A rare feat!
