If jump-scares qualify as entertainment for you, 2023 is going to be a great year! Basically, there’s A LOT to look forward to for all my fellow horror movie fans. A number of horror movies are set to be released and trust me, you’d want to grab a security blanket before watching any of them! M3GAN (January 13)
Releasing on Friday the 13th, this film is sure to give you the creeps. If you’ve seen all of Chucky’s previous installments, this needs to be on your watch list! It’s a fresh take on the possessed-doll-gone-murderous trope. Roboticist Gemma creates M3GAN, an AI-assisted lifelike doll that can be a child’s best friend while also assisting parents. Things take a turn for the worse when Gemma gains custody of her niece after a car accident kills the girl’s parents. M3GAN starts taking her job a little too seriously, killing anyone who stands in her way.
Knock At The Cabin (February 3)
Just the premise of this apocalyptic psychological thriller will give you the chills. This scary story starts with four strangers kidnapping a family holidaying at a cabin in the woods. The kidnappers tell them that an impending apocalypse can be stopped if they sacrifice one of their family members. Chilling, right?
Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey (February 15)
We all know Winnie-the-Pooh as the iconic cartoon character who loved his friends and enjoyed honey. However, this film is set to change it all. In the film, Winnie-the-Pooh goes on a murderous rampage against Christopher Robin. And guess who is going to be his partner in crime? An equally evil Piglet! Chances are that this film will effectively ruin your childhood. So watch it at your own risk.
Dhundh (February 21)
Dhundh marks Aftab Shivdasani’s debut as a producer. While little is known about the plot, we hear it will be a psychological horror woven around a love story. It’s been a while since we watched a chilling Bollywood horror flick, and we have high expectations from this one!
Scream VI (March 10)
If you’ve seen the previous installments of Scream, you wouldn’t want to miss this one. The film sets in motion when Samantha, Tara, Mindy, and Chad relocate to New York after the final round of Ghostface killings in the hope of starting over. However, the plan is quickly derailed when the Big Apple becomes the site of a new wave of murders committed by their old foe.
Evil Dead Rise (April 21)
The Evil Dead franchise is not for the faint of heart, and the latest installment is going to be an intense watch. This time, the setting is going to be a city instead of the woods. The plot will revolve around two estranged sisters’ reunion being cut short by the arrival of a group of demons against whom they must fight if they are to survive. Things will worsen when one of the sisters gets possessed and goes on a murderous rampage against her own children.
Insidious: Fear The Dark (July 7)
The fifth installment in the Insidious franchise, Fear The Dark actually serves as a direct sequel to the first two films in the series. Set ten years after Insidious: Chapter 2, the film revolves around Dalton heading off to college, ready to enter a new chapter of his life. But his past demons have other plans, and they soon rear their heads to create a whole new nightmare.
The Nun 2 (September 8)
Set in 1956 France, the film revolves around Sister Irene who is once again confronted by the Nun, a demonic entity disguised as a religious woman. As part of The Conjuring franchise, writer James Wan previously hinted that The Nun 2 could bring the series “full circle” and tie it with Lorraine Warren’s story from The Conjuring.
The Exorcist (October 13)
Well, no one can beat the classic and thankfully, this is not a remake of the original. Instead, Blumhouse’s new Exorcist movie is a direct sequel of the 1973 original. The plot is yet to be revealed, but it will centre on the father of a possessed child looking for other parents who have been in a similar situation.
Chhorii 2 (Unknown Release Date)
Chhorii 2 is the follow-up to the groundbreaking Indian horror film Chhorii, which was a smashing hit on Amazon Prime Video. Sakshi, who unwittingly sought refuge in a village haunted by the ghost of a pregnant woman who died in violent circumstances in the first film, was last seen fleeing the village through sugarcane fields. Chhorii 2 will pick up Sakshi’s story where it left off, bringing back some key characters while also introducing new characters and monsters.
