Netflix’s New Movie ‘Wedding Season’ Has Desi Leads & Here’s Why It’s Our Fave Rom-Com Of 2022

The perfect recipe for a feel-good rom-com is a heartwarming love story, lines that make us chuckle, and some twists and turns to keep us hooked throughout. And what happens when you add a gorgeous desi pair to this mix? It’s a visual treat that will have you feeling weak in your knees! And if you’re anything like us and can’t wait to get a spoonful of rom-com on your plate, then this new Netflix film is definitely the one for you.

Wedding Season stars the talented duo Pallavi Sharda and Suraj Sharma, who perfectly portray the roles of Indian-Americans that are finding their way in life. The movie also sheds light on societal pressure to find a partner. While the trope may seem overdone, it works due to clever writing and the non-clichéd take on the subject. To know why this film takes the crown of being our fave rom-com of the year, read on!

The Relatable AF Plotline

This film has our heart due to its hella relatable storyline. Asha and Ravi are independent adults with successful careers. And yet they still find their parents heavily invested in their love lives, nudging them to “settle down”. (Ugh, don’t we all know what that’s like!).

Both of them are set up on a date by their respective parents and soon get involved in a fake courtship just to get their parents off their backs. And without spoiling too much for you, the story is all about finding your soulmate while battling their inner demons.

The Sizzling Chemistry

Netflix

NGL, while parts of the movie may seem rehashed, the crackling chemistry between the leads will pull you back to the plot each time. Asha and Ravi have a fun repartee that is delightful to watch. And they will make your hearts melt each time they share a moment together on-screen. Also, who can ever get over Ravi’s oh-so-adorbs speech at the end that made us also fall in love with him, too?

Desi Expectations

Netflix

It doesn’t matter where you reside on planet Earth, the movie hilariously showcases how one cannot escape from the desi baggage of colossal expectation. Wedding Season cleverly shows us how we as a society still expect men and women to be career oriented and independent, but will not be satisfied unless there’s a ring on the finger.

There’s a scene in the movie that perfectly captures the parental pressures. It’s the time when Asha’s mom says to her, “I said to myself If I ever had daughters, I would let them choose their fate, their happiness”. Asha responds in the most badass way highlighting her mom’s hypocrisy, as she replies, “Yeah as long as we have 5 MBAs, choose a nice guy and can make round rotis.” Touché!

Breaking Gender Stereotypes

Truth be told, Asha was the hero for us in the film, who carried the entire plot on her shoulders. Not only does she manage her career like a boss, but Asha also isn’t afraid about fighting for her dreams. She doesn’t shy away from putting herself first, even if it may mean she is selfish. And always has a good response to nosy aunties who try to bring her down because she is more focused on her career, than she is about finding a man.

Real Indian Representation FTW

Netflix

For long, movies about Indian-Americans have been far too stereotypical. With tacky dress and questionable English and accents, we never felt like we were accurately represented on screen. Finally, thanks to Wedding Season and its makers, we see a fresh view of the Indian-American diaspora who are trying to make their place in the land of dreams.

Well, this bite-sized movie is the perfect treat for anyone looking for a light-hearted watch. So if you’re in the mood for something like this, you can stream this delightful film on Netflix
