Any small change in an actress’s appearance quickly becomes a headline. People love to speculate whether a celebrity has had any work done. If she has, there’s talk of how she “used to look better.” If she hasn’t, the same critique follows—“she used to look better.” More often than not, actresses end up having to address these rumors to clarify if they’ve actually had any procedures done. But why do we care? It’s their body, their choice. Recently, Nayanthara addressed the rumors surrounding changes in her appearance, and it left me with a lot to think about.
In conversation with Hauterrfly, Nayanthara talked about the one ritual she follows before a red carpet and she revealed that she loves doing her brows. However, she also added how changing her eyebrows throughout the years has made her look different. She said, “I take the time to perfect it because it’s the real game changer. I’ve had different brow phases over the years. Maybe that’s why people think my face is changing and I keep looking different. Maybe that’s why a lot of people think I’ve done something to my face.”
She then added, “But that’s not true. On record…not true. Not that it’s wrong. But for me, it has just been diet, so there’s been a lot of weight fluctuation and my cheeks go in and out. You can pinch me, burn me, you’ll know there’s no plastic in here.”
Here’s why this is concerning: Nayanthara opening up about her routine highlights how little people understand the impact of a good diet, makeup, and consistent workout. I’ve seen people make dramatic transformations simply by changing their lifestyles. As actresses and public figures, it’s part of their job to look polished and presentable. So why speculate when we know that dedication and self-care can yield these results? And even if they did get some work done, it’s their choice; it’s frustrating to see actresses coming clean now and then.
Our society thrives on superficiality. If someone doesn’t meet a certain standard, they’re criticized. If they do, they’re labeled as “plastic.” Why not just let others live?
