I had an inkling that my engagement to Sanjay was coming to an end. It had been a month that he had been acting a bit distant – he hardly messaged me and we would rarely talk on the phone. But like most girls madly in love with someone do, I tried to persuade myself that I was just seeing too much into this.
My fear came true on January 1, 2012 when Sanjay and his mother came to my home. His mom told my parents that they are ending our engagement while he sat next to her without even uttering a single word. We returned our rings and my engagement was formally over.

I can’t say if I was more shocked or relieved – I was going through so many types of emotions. I didn’t know if I should cry or be strong for the sake of my parents. Till that morning, they were busy preparing for my wedding and now everything was over.
It took me two months to get over this and after that I travelled to different cities, met my friends more often and partied. My doubt about another woman being the reason for Sanjay breaking our engagement was also cleared. I found out that the downfall of our relationship had started from the time Sanjay had met her. Like they say, a woman’s instinct about such things are always right.
One day while I was going to my office, the radio was on in my cab. There was a show going on and suddenly I heard a familiar voice. The guy was talking about the love of his life and he proposed to his girl on air. It was Sanjay and he used the same words he used while proposing me.
Even the cab driver noticed the shocked expression on my face, through the rear view mirror and asked if he should turn off the stereo. I told him not to because I wanted to listen to the whole thing. I had never felt that horrible ever in my life. For most listeners it might have been a rather cute incident of a guy declaring his love to his girlfriend but for me it was the worst torture.

The moment I reached office, I checked his Facebook account and I saw images of him with her – all the happy-couple types images.
All I want to say to other women is that always trust your instincts. Nobody knows about your relationship like you do and you know what no one else knows. It was one of the most difficult phases of my life and it also changed me as a person. It made me realise the importance of being independent and trusting my gut instincts. While I always used to put the relationship before myself, now I have understood how to prioritise things in life.
