Our mothers are childhood friends, so I met Namit when I was a child, when we both were on a vacation at our moms’ hometown. Though we lived in different cities, we kept our friendship alive through mails, chats and phone calls.
Despite the distance, we both grew closer to each other. Whenever there was any confusion in my life I would talk to him, and whenever I had some good news he would be the first to know. I knew I could share any secret of mine with him without the fear of being judged. He felt the same way about me. We would talk about everything and anything in this world… we often had heated discussions on certain topics as well.

After graduation, Namit shifted to California where he got a good job and I shifted to Delhi to practice law. Things started changing between us, while we were still good friends, we hardly found time to talk – our hectic work life and difference in time zone were to be blamed.
The same year, when I was visiting my parents during Diwali holidays, they started talking to me about marriage. They wanted me to meet this advocate in Jaipur. I had just started my career and was not ready to get married. My parents kept insisting and I got very upset; I really had to talk to someone. That night, I called Namit and poured my heart out, and he listened to my ranting like he always does. After about half an hour, he totally changed my mood… he said something stupid and made me laugh.
The next morning, I got a text from him saying that he wanted to talk to me about something important. A bit concerned, I told him to come on Skype. However, he said that we should meet on Skype at 7 that evening.
I called him at 7, and there he was with a bouquet of red roses and a keychain, the one I had gifted him when he left for the US. Before I could say anything, he said, “They say friendship is very important for a marriage to sustain. We have been friends for such a long time and no one knows me the way you do. Last night when you told me that your parents want you to meet other guys for marriage, I realized that I have fallen in love with you… I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So, will you marry me?”
I was totally surprised by what he said and had no idea how to react. He understood what I was feeling and told me to take time before saying anything.
I couldn’t sleep that night and was restless the day after as well. Namit’s proposal was all I could think about. Getting married to someone I knew so well was always a better option than marrying a complete stranger, but then I wasn’t in love with Namit. I was very confused as to what I should tell him. I just told him the truth about what I was thinking when we spoke that night. He convinced me that we should give a shot at being in a relationship.

Two years have passed since we had that conversation and our relationship has grown stronger with every day. Despite the busy schedule, time difference and other issues, we have managed to take time out for each other.
And I am hopelessly in love with him now. We have even told our parents and they couldn’t be happier. We will get engaged the next time he visits India.
