Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can do no wrong. If you thought Pee Cee is the only Indian attending the Royal Wedding then you are wrong. Meghan Markle has invited a Women’s NGO from Mumbai and Chef Rosie Ginday too. Not only that, Myna Mahila Foundation is one among the seven other charities chosen by Prince Harry and Meghan to receive donations instead of a wedding gifts. The NGO hires women from the slums of Govandi to make reasonably priced sanitary pads and spread awareness about menstrual hygiene.
It was in 2016, Suhani Jalota, the Founder of Myna Mahila Foundation, met Meghan Markle at an award ceremony in New York for the first time. It didn’t take long to impress Meghan with the initiative taken by Suhani on menstrual hygiene. The meeting was followed by the Suits star paying a visit to Mumbai’s Govandi last year and spending four days with the NGO to understand the issues and challenges the women and girls go through in the slums. Meghan’s visit was soon followed by wedding invitations for Suhani but four other team members as well.
Expressing her excitement Suhani says, “They have invited me with four other people. We are looking for funding because they haven’t provided the money but they have provided the invitations. So, if we find sponsors, five of us will be able to go. This would be a great experience and exposure for the women here. Many of them have never left the city, some of them have never left the slums so going to London would be an incredible opportunity”.
The Indian guest list also includes the famous chef Rosie Ginday. She’s one amaong 1,200 guests who have been invited to the royal affair. Ginday is the founder of ‘Miss Macaroon’, that makes and sells macaroons and also helps in the employment of youth. The royal couple visited the Birmingham-based outlet last month and tasted some of the macaroons too.
An overjoyed Ginday shares, “It’s really exciting to receive this invitation and be acknowledged in this way. They are using the occasion to shine a light on organisations working to improve their communities, which is fantastic.” Ginday is planning to take some macaroons to the wedding and share it with guests there.
