Malaika’s Sugary DIY Recipe Is Too Sweet To Pass Up On

Malaika Arora and sugar don’t quite go together, do they? But it depends on the context. Most of us know that Arora isn’t simply devoted to fitness and meditation. There’s something else that piques her interest, and it’s skincare, especially easily whipped-up DIYs that make you glow.

Here’s what caught my attention. Malaika’s go-to ingredient for her DIY body scrub is sugar and lots of it. But not the kind you think. Read on to find out what I’m talking about.

What’s Inside Her DIY Scrub?

Malaika DIY scrub is composed of coffee, sugar, and an oil of your choice. Arora favours coconut and almond oils; but you can opt for jojoba, olive, or other kinds depending on your preference. All she does is massage the scrub onto the body for a couple of minutes, and that’s that.

But the catch is that Malaika’s choice of sugar is brown; which made me wonder if there’s any difference between the white and brown varieties at all.

Why Brown Sugar Is A Better Choice For The Skin

Though both exfoliate and hydrate the skin effectively, there are a couple of things that set them apart from each other.

The brown variety is much gentler on the skin. It’s not abrasive or irritating; unlike your plain ‘ol white sugar. The texture is less coarse and the granules are smaller and finer in comparison. This works well for those of you with sensitive, reactive skin. It also means that you can apply the scrub to your face and neck without worrying about it hurting your skin. Talk about convenience.

The fact that it smells pleasant is another reason to add a little bit of it to your DIY. But that’s not all. The brown variety is coloured with something known as molasses. High in Vitamin B, this is an antioxidant that defends your skin against UV-induced damage effectively. It even softens and smooths over the skin which acts as further proof that it can treat conditions like psoriasis and eczema. It contains Lactic Acid, it can treat acne safely too.

Brown sugar contains Glycolic Acid as well; which allows it to fade scars and blemishes on the skin over time. What can it not do?
