Indian daily soaps run on just three things—docile bahus, bad husbands and cruel in-laws. That’s the recipe that Hindi TV shows have been following for years now and we’re so bored. There have been some changes in the plot in recent times and we have defs seen some female leads taking a stand for themselves. But, it’s 2021 and speaking up for your rights is not enough. TBH, that’s the bare minimum and we deserve more. We need to see supportive in-laws and amazing husbands who are progressive and treat their wives as their partners—as equals.
Well, it’s high time that daily soaps do away with male protagonists who are full of toxic traits. #10 Virat (Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin)
While we agree that Virat supports his wife, Sai, in front of his family, he does gaslight her in different ways. Instead of accepting that he had feelings for Patralekha before his marriage, he blames his wife for being delusional. Things would be a lot simpler for him if he just accepts the truth and moves on.
#9 Anant (Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2)
Our only problem with this man is that he does not take a stand for his wife, Gehna. Given that it is his family who’s torturing his wife, it is kinda his responsibility to ask them to back off. But, for the longest time, he did not even care that she existed. Umm…why marry her at all then?
#8 Paritosh (Anupamaa)
Apart from the fact that Paritosh is sexist and acts like an entitled brat, we think he does quite a shoddy job at being a husband as well. Instead of discussing issues with his wife, Kinjal (like mature couples), Toshu expects her to readily agree with all his decisions. You are not her boss, boy!
#7 Shiva (Pandya Store)
We know what they say—boys fight the most with the girls they have a crush on. But, believe it or not, that’s a major turn off. While it is still acceptable for school kids to indulge in some cute banters with their crush, we cannot accept grown men to do the same. Shiva treats his wife, Raavi, like an enemy despite having feelings for her. Also, he needs to work on his trust issues because this aggressive and jealous husband character is quite annoying.
#6 Rudraksh (Yeh Hai Chahatein)
Men deciding to ruin a girl’s life by marrying her is one of the most problematic things shown on daily soaps. Rudraksh married Preesha to take revenge and legit treated her like an object. Even after ‘redeeming’ himself, he continues to act aggressively with her whenever situations between them get difficult. TBH, this hot-and-cold behaviour makes him one of the most unreliable on-screen husbands ever.
#5 Jethalal (Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah)
Making fun of your wife, not supporting her in public, lying to her, checking out another woman and flirting with her blatantly are not acceptable. It’s defs not funny. Jethalal should realise that he’s happily married to a wonderful woman and stop daydreaming about his neighbour. It’s so not cool!
#4 Samrat (Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin)
Every marriage has its own problems. But, Samrat’s ultimate solution to end all the issues in his marriage was to run away. He abandoned his wife and did not care to even give her proper closure. How effed up is that?
#3 Aditya (Imlie)
Despite being a married man, he married another woman. He lied, betrayed and disrespected both his wives at different stages. We really don’t need to say anything more.
#2 Fateh (Udaariyaan)
Fateh lied to his wife and made her believe that he’s over his ex when he clearly wasn’t. He made false promises to her. He cheated on her and had an extra-marital affair. He had the audacity to get mad when he ‘thought’ that his wife was cheating on him too. We really don’t know why Indian daily soaps are obsessed with cheating husbands and forgiving wives. Give us a break already!
#1 Vanraj (Anupamaa)
Vanraj is truly is a textbook toxic husband and there are no two ways about it. He cheated on his wife for years, treated her worse than an enemy and expected her to forgive him after she caught his lies. He didn’t wish to marry his girlfriend after his first marriage ended and later expected his second wife to babysit him. Also, he’s now jealous that his first wife is moving on in life. TBH, men like him should stay single forever. They do not deserve love and definitely not strong women like Anupamaa and Kavya in their lives.
