Coco Channel said, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.”
I think this quote has inspired Kirti Kulhari in the best way possible. The actress recently decided to go for a pixie haircut and she is owning it. While I am already obsessed with her new look, it was her empowering note that got my attention.
Taking to the ‘Gram Kirti wrote about how it is an unsaid rule for actresses to have long hair. She wrote that she has had enough of the norms of the society and the actress went against the grain.
Kirti wrote, “#newendings #newbeginnings Decided to do this a month back and here I am, having done it I work in an industry where being a #heroine comes with its own set of restrictions and limitations. Long hair or atleast shoulder length hair is an unsaid mandate. Here I am , almost 15 years later, in the industry, #doingmything. I have no time to not do what I want to do… and each time I have done something which is not #thenorm, I have felt empowered and nothing short of it . Here I am , making another such choice and living my life #myway.” Scroll down for the video:
For me, Kirti’s new look is a way of reclaiming agency. It is about breaking the mould of what a Bollywood heroine should look like. The new-age woman is not the one to live by the standards of conventional beauty. In a way, Kirti has declared war on what is the ‘right’ way to be a leading lady in Bollywood. It is cultural beauty standard reset moment, and I am living for it. Remember when Arya Stark in Game Of Thrones decided to chop her hair off ‘coz she was done with how a lady should be? Kirti’s haircut moment has a similar feel to it!
Kirti has always be the one to take up interesting, challenging and unconventional roles without giving two hoots about what people will think. So, this new look is not surprising but simply inspiring. The best part of it all is, this is not for a role, but just for herself.
It takes courage to be your true self when the world is watching, and I am proud of Kirti!
