Karan Johar is one of those people, who, even if you may not agree with at all times, you wait to hear. One of the many reasons according to me is the fact that he has an emotional intelligence that not a lot of people possess. He’s flawed but he’s also very honest – which is actually more human than being ‘correct’ all the time. A number of Koffee With Karan episodes are proof of it, like the recent one featuring Aditya Roy Kapur and Arjun Kapoor.
At one point during the episode, the three talked about trolls and negative comments targeting their personal lives. Karan Johar mentioned that like him, Arjun Kapoor is someone who reads things that are written about him. They also talked about how some of these comments hit home in a literal sense, and the fact that they can eat into a relationship. KJo went on to discuss the backlash that the first episode of this season recieved – after Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh opened up about their realtionship.
He said, “I just want to put it out there that the reaction angered me. I thought it was one of our best episodes. They were outstandingly honest. They were earnest. They were so gracious. And then you’re fucking talking about some nonsense.”
It was particularly nice of him to take a stand for Deepika and Ranveer, especially how people targeted Deepika after the episode. The actor was called out for dating more than one person before getting married, and it came out in the most misogynistic ways. While the reactions do not hold meaning, they have an impact. So acknowledging them is almost important at times, taking a stand is even more important.
A person like Karan Johar can easily ignore such instances, but seeing him take responsibility was in fact refreshing. Certainly, this is a normal reaction to the incident, but the fact that such a thing is so rare, made it gutsy. There’s also the added truth that he’s often trolled for his opinions, so saying something knowing that it could easily backfire is a bigger deal.
Karan Johar manages to do what most celebs cannot.
