I Can Do What I Want In My Own Time: Jennifer Winget On Being Alone During Lockdown

With the coronavirus outbreak taking lives every day, governments across the globe have implemented strict lockdowns to curb the spread of the virus. In India, the lockdown started on March 25, and while it was supposed to be lifted on April 24, the government decided to extend it till May 3 owing to the rapid rise in cases.

While we are grateful to have the privilege to be at home during such trying times, the social isolation can also have an adverse effect on our mental health. People have taken to several creative activities in order to spend their time indoors more meaningfully–for some, it’s cooking, for others, it’s a creative hobby.

Being stuck indoors alone during the lockdown might sound like a daunting thought for many, but not for TV Actor Jennifer Winget. “One of the advantages of being alone in this lockdown is that I can do what I want on my own time,” she said in a recent interview to a leading daily.

The actor added that she is loving being at home with her dog and taking care of herself. “Many people are quite concerned that I am in quarantine solo, but it has been fine. Sure there is anxiety sometimes but I am coping. Then I count my blessings and hope that we will all sail through this in due course,” she said.

We’re all aware of how hectic actors’ schedules can get while shooting. Surprisingly, Jennifer feels that she is busier at home doing chores than while shooting! “Cooking is not my forte but I am managing with the help of video calls with friends and family. Cooking, cleaning and taking care of my mutt takes up a lot of time. So, the day passes by quickly. Earlier too there was so much work at home but one didn’t pay much attention to it. Now, everything is intensified,” she said.

We feel you, Jennifer! But is there a chore she doesn’t enjoy? “Once the lockdown is over, I won’t miss cleaning for sure (laughs). I don’t force myself to do anything and go with the flow. It is important to maintain the mental and physical balance,” she added.

The actor decided to stay indoors and practice social distancing as soon as the shootings were halted. Her parents live close to her house.

Besides chores, Jennifer has also taken up a creative pursuit–painting! She said she finds it “destressing and healing”. However, she does emphasise that the lockdown isn’t a productivity contest, and one should do what they enjoy. “So many people are working from home and you can end up overworking yourself. One needs to set a schedule and take breaks. We should use this time to work on yourself which could be focusing on fitness, a hobby or just spending time with family,” she said.

Acting, cooking, painting–is there anything our favourite TV star CAN’T do? We do echo her sentiment and urge everyone to focus on their mental health instead of trying to be productive all the time. We can’t wait for the world to defeat coronavirus, and see Jennifer on our small screens again. Until then, stay indoors and stay safe.
