Janhvi Kapoor Has Riled Up The Internet With This Statement & Here’s Why We Think It’s Problematic

It’s a new day and a new celeb has become a victim of online trolling. From veterans like Shah Rukh Khan to newcomers like Shanaya Kapoor, there’s no hiding from a roasting party on social media. While sometimes it’s totally uncalled for, other times celebrities say something so outrageous that the trolling is inevitable. Remember when Ananya Pandey made a comment on her ‘struggles’? And today, a new star has boarded the ‘tone-deaf statements’ train and it’s none other than Janhvi Kapoor.

In a recent interview with a media portal, Janhvi used a problematic word to describe her most-hated subject in school—maths. She said, “I don’t understand the point. Calculator invent hone ke baad aaj tak maine algebra ka istemaal kiya hi nahi hai toh itna kyun maine sar toda (I never used algebra since the invention of calculators, so why did I need to study it so hard). Like… What was the point? History and literature on the other hand make you a cultured human. Maths just makes you retarded, I think.” While we sympathise with the Dhadak actress and can totally relate to her dislike for the subject, we think she should’ve chosen her words more carefully.

The internet, too, seems to be of the same opinion. Many netizens slammed the actress for being insensitive towards people with intellectual disabilities. Others called Janhvi out for belittling those passionate about the subject. A Twitter user posted, “Not liking a subject is very much okay but saying that studying a subject makes you retarded??! Does she understand how offensive that word is?”. And another netizen took to the ‘Gram and said, “Using the r slur is so not cool lol”.

To quote Spiderman, ‘with more power comes more responsibility’, and we believe celebs should understand the responsibilities that come with being a public figure. While we never condone trolling, we hope that Janhvi chooses her words more carefully in the future. Here’s hoping there’s a lesson in here for everybody!
