Till school, I loved my long locks. But by the time I stepped into college, my hair texture changed for the worse! Blame it on a hormonal imbalance or Bombay’s pollution and heat, no shampoo in the market could tame my frizzy mane. Every single time I shampooed my hair, it became rough, brittle and dry. The chemicals in those bottles were damaging my hair by the day! I even splurged on fancy hair products and fixed appointments with various hair specialists, but those were all short-lived results.
I eventually got tired of trying to better my hair’s texture and decided to live with a messy bun on some days and go for a plait on others, all through my college years. Never did a time come when I was confident enough to let my hair loose. I did it once actually – worst decision EVER! I was called ‘chidiya ka ghosla’ all freakin’ day! I remember even bunking class that day because I couldn’t deal with all the jokes and embarrassment. I got home and burst into tears. My sister panicked as she saw me break down! I told her about everything that happened in college. She hugged me and suggested I go the natural way.
It was after I responded to her with a confused expression, that she told me I should try making a natural shampoo at home. This would be a shampoo made with some basic ingredients, and I felt it was an option worth considering. The idea excited me! My sister knew of a recipe that she learnt from her hostel friends. It included, grated soap flakes, almond oil, boiling hot water and peppermint.
We decided to give it a shot the next morning. Both of us headed to the kitchen, pulled out containers, arranged the ingredients and got things in place for this experiment. She first asked me to grate a small bar of soap specifically made from natural ingredients. I then boiled a cup of water and tossed the grated soap flakes into a glass jar. Once the water was hot enough, I poured it into the soap jar and used a spoon to stir and dissolve the soap flakes.
We then added one-fourth cup of almond oil soon after and just 5-8 drops of peppermint oil. Giving all the ingredients a good stir, I placed the jar in the refrigerator for 30 minutes for it to cool down. I poured the chilled liquid into an old shampoo bottle and voila! It was ready to use!
I was so skeptical at first, but after trying this natural shampoo, my hair feels very different. It looks healthy and I love how soft and smooth it makes my mane feel! It’s very easy to make and the ingredients are commonly found anywhere. If you’re the kind of girl who’s fighting the same ugly battle with her hair, you should totally try making this natural homemade shampoo – because it’s the best! You can thank me later too. *Wink*
