The Complete Guide To Layering Makeup With Sunscreen For A Summer Glow

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a zillion times: Sunscreen is important. It protects you from skin cancer, wards off pigmentation, and helps prevents wrinkles – you know the spiel. However, that being said, the topic of wearing sunscreen with makeup – especially wearing sunscreen with foundation is not so cut and dry, as it brings up a series of questions and concerns. What level of protection do you use? Should you reapply sunscreen? Does SPF-infused makeup work? Should sunscreen go over your foundation? Or should it go under the foundation? We could go on and on. Well, let’s get this sorted out. Ahead, we’re filling you in on step-by-step for layering SPF and makeup for super potent glow!

Here’s How To Layer Makeup And Sunscreen

Step 1: Cleanse Using A Light Facial Cleanser

No matter your skin type, it’s important to opt for a soothing and light facial cleanser that is either milk-based or gel-based. Such cleansers will deep cleanse your skin without stripping off the natural oils of your skin.

Step 2: Tone

Apply a hydrating toner to boost hydration, reduce the appearance of pores, and give your skin some extra lovin’.

Step 3: Apply An Illuminating Serum

Go for a glow-inducing serum that comprises hyaluronic acid for hydration, and Vitamins C, E, or A for skin that radiates so much that your lit factor gives the sun a run for its money

Step 4: Apply A Lightweight Moisturiser

Swap heavy lotions for lightweight moisturisers that dissolve quickly into your skin. We recommend opting for hyaluronic acid or water-based formula for dewy-looking skin.

Step 5: Slather On Your Sunscreen

Apply two fingers’ worth of SPF (a dime-sized amount) to your face, neck, and decolletage once you’ve completed your skincare routine and before you start applying your makeup. We recommend opting for a lightweight formula that gets a 10/10 for its white-cast-free finish. Apply it on the hairline, forehead, sides of your cheek, and jawline. These areas are the ones that get the most sun exposure.

Step 6: Apply Primer

A lot of people make a mistake here and apply primer before the sunscreen. This is important to understand that all skincare products go on the skin before primer.

Step 7: Go In With Your Foundation

Use a foundation with SPF and it will help act as a protective layer over your sunscreen and primer. If you’re someone who does not use a heavy foundation, a tinted BB cream with SPF works.

Step 8: Seal The Deal

Apply the rest of your makeup. You can add extra protection with every layer by opting for products with an SPF variant. A setting spray that contains SPF is the easiest way to top up your skin protection throughout the day. It won’t mess up your makeup, and most formulas also have hydrating ingredients to refresh and rejuvenate your skin – it’s a win-win.

You glow girl!
