On Monday, two major decisions were made by the Indian government in regard to its most controversial tug-of-war, the special status of Kashmir. There were 28,000 troops deployed in Kashmir and the Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPFs) took over all the major entry and exit points. Jammu and Kashmir, a state which has faced unrelentless violence in the last 30 years has now been separated into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Article 35A of the Indian constitution, which gave some special privileges to the people of the state, has been scrapped by the Indian goverment. Along with Article 370, which allowed the state a certain amount of autonomy, by allowing Jammu and Kashmir to make its own rules relating to permanent residency, ownership of property and fundamental rights.
However, both the articles were scrapped by the government in a bid to integrate Kashmir and engulf it in the same umbrella as the rest of India.
“I want to tell the people of Jammu and Kashmir what damage Articles 370 and 35A did to the state,” Amit Shah, the president of BJP told the parliament. “It’s because of these sections that democracy was never fully implemented, corruption increased in the state, that no development could take place.”
However, P Chidambaram, a senior leader in the opposition Congress Party said that the decision was a “catastrophic step” and warned that it could have serious consequences. “You may think you have scored a victory, but you are wrong and history will prove you to be wrong. Future generations will realise what a grave mistake this house is making today,” he said.
