Curly Hair, Do Care? Here’s How to Stop Sweat From Damaging Your Gorgeous Curls!

As someone who has curly hair, I can tell you that it is a super high maintenance hairstyle to take care of. First things first, you need to know your curly hair type, choose the right products based on that, and finally, learn how to style it correctly keeping the weather in mind (yeah, humidity ain’t your friend). Working with curly hair involves plenty of trial and error, but once you figure out what curly hair method works for you, things get easier.

Take sweat for example. If you’re a curly-haired woman who works out often, you will agree that washing your curls every day not only ruins the texture of your curls, but also makes your scalp dry and scaly. Not washing your hair completely is not a good solution either. You see, sweat contains salty content. If you don’t wash that sweaty scalp post a workout, it’s going to attract dirt and bacteria, eventually leading to fungal infections and later, dandruff.

You have two options here. Either you wear a sweat headband or make dry shampoo your go-to product. The headband will absorb sweat around the hairline and the dry shampoo will remove any excess wetness from the hair and scalp. However, you should not always depend on dry shampoo, because in the long run, it will prevent natural oils from hydrating the curls, causing brittleness and leading to an accumulation of product buildup on the scalp. For the sake of your curls, use the product sparingly.

To prevent your body from producing too much sweat, make sure that you take frequent sips of water before, after and during your workout. Since skipping the hair wash post your workout is not an option, skip the shampoo. Only shampoo your hair twice a week.

As you know, curly hair has the tendency to dry out quickly. To prevent this from happening, dilute conditioner with water and spray it on the hair. To keep the frizz at bay, you may use a diffuser, but always keep the heat on low. If using heat to dry your curls is not your style, simply apply conditioner and delicately wrap them up in a cotton tee. The soft fabric will absorb moisture without damaging the texture of the curls.

I personally recommend that you try the squish to condish curly hair method. You will have to untangle your curly hair with a wide-tooth comb, apply conditioner and then gently squeeze the hair till there’s barely any water that drips from it. Not only will the sweat be washed off, but your locks will be shiny, smooth and hydrated to the tea.
