Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan have been married for over two decades, and their journey together has seen its share of ups and downs. Despite the challenges, they remain one of Bollywood’s most adored couples, setting relationship goals for many. But did you know there was a time when Gauri almost decided to leave SRK?
In a 1994 interview with Filmfare, Gauri revealed that she once considered breaking up with Shah Rukh because of her family’s concerns. She said, “Oh, that was at the beginning when my family had yet to reconcile themselves to the fact that he’s a Muslim. I didn’t want to hurt my family, so I decided to break up with Shah Rukh.”
However, there was another reason that made Gauri question their relationship—SRK’s possessive nature. She explained, “He was becoming a little too possessive, and I’m a very independent person. I need space. Shah Rukh made me claustrophobic. The tensions were getting too much, so I decided there was no point in carrying on.”
But, true to his title as the ‘King of Romance’, SRK didn’t give up on her. He pursued her even after she moved to Mumbai. Recalling the incident, Gauri said, “Shah Rukh’s very determined; he manages to get what he wants. And he wanted me. I remember the time I’d broken up with him and had come to Bombay with some friends. For a week, we had a great time partying and shopping. On the last day, when we were to return to Delhi, I looked out of the window, and there he was, standing under our building. At that moment, I hated him for following me all the way from Delhi.”
Despite these initial hurdles, their love story survived, and today they’re celebrated as one of the most iconic couples in Bollywood.
