I’ve been telling my colleagues how bad I want to join a pole dancing class. The first thing they asked me was, “Is it in Mumbai?” Hell yeah, it is! Not that I aspire to become a professional pole dancer, but I’ve been wanting to experience something new for a while. An activity that’s out of my comfort zone and makes me grow as a person. I mean, that’s just me. Other than pole dancing, you can get yourself enrolled in any fun activities to get fit in Mumbai. Classes like ballet, taichi, rock climbing, surfing, aerial yoga, zumba, martial arts and many more are waiting to be explored. Let’s check all these alternatives to gym in Mumbai, shall we?

This a super fun way to get fit. After all, it improves your physique, flexibility and core strength. Ladies, it’s not as easy as it looks though. Hard work and patience is required from your end. The first few classes will make your body feel sore, but you’ll get used to it after a while. A session of pole dancing at the Space lasts for 60 minutes. This includes all your drills, spins and pull-ups. You can either seek private or group tutorials. For pricing, you will have to contact the studio.

2. The Art of Ballet

You don’t need to travel abroad to learn ballet. You can do so in Mumbai itself. This place called ‘The Square’ in Powai offers ballet classes for both adults and children. Classes are priced at about INR 6,600 (for adults) for 12 sessions and a little cheaper for children. If you must know, ballet improves strength, posture and flexibility. I bet you’ll feel more energised and balanced after every session.

I’ve been here before and to be honest, I’d love to visit again. To reach the beach, you will have to drive to Rajodi Beach in Virar. Suyash Rawat is your person here. He and his team are a fun bunch of people and surfing with them is memorable experience by itself. Also, surfing benefits your shoulders, back and core strength. It’s about 1,000 bucks per class and you should go surfing post the monsoons. End of August onwards to be precise. The tides and weather are calmer during that time. Can you believe that Mumbai now has its own surf club? I didn’t too until I experienced this amazing place.

4. It’s Time To Zumba

Almost every pocket in Mumbai has a Zumba class popping up. This form of dance fitness helps you to de-stress, boost your heart rate, improves coordination and tones your entire body. Do keep in mind that the price of these classes (let’s say 12 weeks) will cost you anywhere between 1,000 Rs to 5,000 Rs.

5. Ready To Go Rock Climbing?

There are a few outdoor rock climbing centres in Mumbai, but I don’t recommend them. Let’s Play Adventure Zone is pretty amazing. It’s clean, the staff is fun and it’s not only meant for kids. I love this place and it makes me feel like a kid all over again.

6. Ariel Yoga For The Win

If you want to look like a hottie while you work out, you might want to give Ariel Yoga a shot. It’s a more advanced form of yoga, but even a beginner can get the hang of it over time. Do you know what’s even cooler? Aerial yoga helps to boost your brain’s production of dopamine and endorphins.

7. Say Hello To Tai Chi

Tai Chi is not an activity you can take part in Mumbai. While it stretches and stimulates muscle, joints and organs, it also helps dissolve any energy blockages. Plus, it improves your stamina and blood circulation. It’s the best way to get stronger and fitter.

Who said boxing is only a man’s sport? Women can box too! While there are plenty of private classes, I suggest that you try the one at Cult fitness. The space is big and the energy is infectious. There are plenty of centres around, feel free to join one that’s close to your home.
